The US Democrats need to look at their next Presidency as an endless sprint to obliterate MAGA, every day for years. Until the cancer is gone then there should be no time wasted on MAGA tears or conciliation. Only endless justice and rebuilding the democracy. Govern like every day is the last day.

I don't think he's actually proposing legislation here anyway otherwise e.g he'd need 60 Senate votes. They already control the house and Senate today

People make fun of imperial units for temp when they should be making fun of our drill bit sizes. Those are indefensible.

I agree and I think the video demonstrates a bit of why: for F, it shows an integer, but for C it needs to show a decimal. It's a 3-digit temp because Celsius degrees are big enough that you need more precision.

This is an excellent take on the increase in senior drivers and the consequences they face and we face from our car-dependence. I had to go through this with my parents. My late father refused to give up his keys long past when he should've. My mom has done so, but is now severely isolated.

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

I'm not the audience for the Smith hearing, but the main political issue here is that Republicans want the world to know that Smith subpoenaed congressional phone records as he investigated Jan. 6 etc, and nobody outside the Senate can explain to you why that's bad.

folks always like to say "but one day the sun will engulf the earth" and, yes, I guess so, but farming was invented 12,000 years ago and we have about 83,300 times the distance between now and then to work that out, it is one of the most extreme-opposite-of-urgent problems

The theme of Trump’s second term is his using the power of the presidency as though it’s his own. That manifests in tantrums booting media outlets from the White House. More harmfully, it also manifests in blocking federal funding to states that didn’t vote for him. www.ctinsider.com/columnist/ar...

A lot of it boils down to people couching their own personal preferences and their own fear of change and loss of privilege behind grand pronouncements of what "no one" will or will not do. You don't want to ride in the cold? That's fine! Lots of people do and even more will if cities make it safe.

Lot of issues here but one part that sticks out in light of the almost-attacked-a-Chinese-ship story today: people with very important jobs where lives are at stake have bought the hype and outsourced their whole brains to AI. We're going to see more and more of this. www.cnn.com/2026/09/18/p...
In the past year, the Defense Department has rapidly made Maven a cornerstone of the US military apparatus. Several former senior US military officials now work for Palantir, including some with high-level security clearances in Centcom’s Tampa headquarters. Their role is to keep the software functioning inside secure military environments. Some Centcom personnel expected Maven to flag stale information or inconsistencies in the underlying intelligence assembled for potential targets, the officials said. It’s not clear why they had such expectations.
The intelligence report, circulated across the US military this spring in the midst of the war with Iran, immediately set off alarm bells: A Chinese ship in the Middle East was transporting components of a nuclear weapons program.

The US military swung into action with plans to intercept the vessel, according to four sources familiar with the episode. According to two of the sources, armed members of the US military were preparing to board the ship. Military planes were in the air, one of those sources and another source familiar with the incident said.

It was only just before the planned operation that officials dug deeper into the report put together by a special operations command analyst and found it had been generated with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) — and that a chatbot the analyst had used inaccurately identified the material the ship was carrying. CNN was not able to learn what the misidentified cargo was.

Btw while I have your attention on diet and climate, “eat local” also isn’t a real climate strategy either. To reduce climate impact: 1. Minimize your food waste 2. Eat more plants and less animal-based foods (esp beef and lamb) 3. Everything else matters a lot less (so eat what you like)

You want to reduce the carbon footprint of your food? Focus on what you eat, not whether your food is local
“Eat local” is a common recommendation to reduce your diet's carbon footprint. How does the impact of what you eat compare to where it comes from?

Just to get it out of the way, before the discourse starts dunking on ‘urbanists’: No one wants regular Americans — who have no transportation choices — to go broke because of trump’s war of choice. There are carrots and sticks, but this is going to genuinely hurt vulnerable people.
