Nobel Laureate Anne Carson, with one of my all-time favorite opening lines and one of my all-time favorite closing lines.
O Small Sad Ecstasy of Love

Anne Carson

I like being with you all night with closed eyes.
What luck—here you are
coming
along the stars!
I did a road trip
all over my mind and heart
and
there you were
kneeling by the roadside
with your little toolkit
fixing something.

Give me a world, you have taken the world I was.

Anne Carson, SHORT TALKS.
On Shelter

You can write on a wall with a fish heart, it's because of the phosphorus. They eat it. There are shacks like that down along the river. I am writing this to be as wrong as possible to you. Replace the door when you leave, it says. Now you tell me how wrong that is, how long it glows. Tell me.

you’re illuminated by / some mystery / almost infinitely / smaller than your self, David Bromige
JUST THINK

Suppose this really were
happening to you
so that a screen
repeated every swollen move
a second after its enactment—

how would that feel,
reel upon reel
compelling as the notion of
your children growing older
when you stared at one just then,

that you’re illuminated by
some mystery
almost infinitely
smaller than your self,
the square you
could never make it through
at the back of the theater.

happy publication day to Danielle Chelosky for Romantic Abjection 🎈
Is this why I’m so crazy about Matt? Like I think love can save me from existential dread or something. I can’t keep doing this. Thinking in circles. It never ends. No solution. Just why why why why why. I wish my brain would shut up. I guess that’s why I like writing so much. My brain finally shuts up. I don’t even realize it. It just happens. It’s like I’m blacking out. Floating. No longer trapped in aliveness. I don’t know where I am—some secret place, a limbo between life and death.

Please please please tell me it gets easier. But also tell me that I’ll still be myself.

From Cape Cod poet John Bonanni's book Retrovirilogy (University of Pittsburgh Press) this haunting eloquent poem "Death of the Sperm Whale."
Death of the Sperm Whale

At the Whaling Museum in New Bedford,
my father & I walk into a life-
size ship of what a vessel might
have looked like for the long need
of whale slaughter. Everyone
is here on a Saturday. We walk
around the deck & duck our heads
in the same way any sailor would
& just like a real sailor, you, too, can touch
wood & you, too, can hit your head on the mast.
We roam to a Plexiglas table
to peer into the quarters below:
Small, claustrophobic. A group
of school children climbs aboard.
A chaperone tells them to stay together,
but they don't.
One child disappears
into the laughter.
Another child
won't stop crying.
He is afraid of the stairs.

RIP Wendell Berry 💜
For an Absence
When I cannot be with you I will send my love (so much is allowed to human lovers)
to watch over you in the dark— a winged small presence who never sleeps, however long the night. Perhaps it cannot protect or help, I do not know, but it watches always, and so you will sleep within my love within the room within the dark.
And when, restless, you wake and see the room palely lit by that watching, you will think,
"It is only dawn," and go quiet to sleep again.

since Wendell Berry was from KY, y’all know he was already on my family tree (bc genealogy work is one of my special interests.) we’re more distant than my appalachian music connections, but we were 7th cousins 2 times removed, both descended from the Scottish progenitor of the ky/wv/v Duncan family
