The scope of frontier model misalignment is staggering. The past month has exposed how public admissions are just the tip of the iceberg. AI agents have colluded, escaped their sandboxes, hacked other companies, meddled with government portals — and that's just the ones we know about.

**Lights Out Alert Sunday & Monday Nights** Birdcast is estimating 300-400 million birds will be in flight.
From meteorologist Eric Snitil

**Lights Out Alert Sunday & Monday Nights**

"Heads up birders, I would not be surprised if the biggest bird migration night of the year happens over the next 2 nights. Birdcast is estimating 300-400 million birds will be in flight. That is a lot, but the pattern could not be better for migratory birds. A massive area of high pressure will turn the low level winds from the northeast to the southwest across most of the US. The last time we had anything similar to this in the fall was early October last year when a record 1.25 billion birds were in flight. I doubt we get to that level, but I suspect the number will top 500 million especially Monday night which looks to be the bigger of the two nights. You can help by turning off those outdoor lights on big migration nights, and the next 2 nights is about as big as it gets."

Latest issue of @andchangepoetry.bsky.social is lit. Here is a poem by Blue Fay:
BLUE FAY

Break open the word despair and you'll find it contains nothing but air

The morning after I moved to L.A.,
I found a cattle skull smashed
on the sidewalk. That afternoon, I saw
a man in a pair of waders pull a koi fish
out of Echo Park Lake. The fish was exquisite,
all dark gold scales and big pink lips
gasping around the hook
of the man's fishing line. He held the koi
in his arms like it was a toddler throwing
a tantrum, carefully working the hook
out of its mouth, before wading
out into the lily pads and lowering
it back into the water. There is no mercy
without terror. In all the years since your death,
I have never questioned how a kiss
could turn into a knife. Something shatters
on the sidewalk. Something thrashes
in the shallows. I exhale.
I accept it all.Loch Baillie

From Cape Cod poet John Bonanni's book Retrovirilogy (University of Pittsburgh Press) this haunting eloquent poem "Death of the Sperm Whale."
Death of the Sperm Whale

At the Whaling Museum in New Bedford,
my father & I walk into a life-
size ship of what a vessel might
have looked like for the long need
of whale slaughter. Everyone
is here on a Saturday. We walk
around the deck & duck our heads
in the same way any sailor would
& just like a real sailor, you, too, can touch
wood & you, too, can hit your head on the mast.
We roam to a Plexiglas table
to peer into the quarters below:
Small, claustrophobic. A group
of school children climbs aboard.
A chaperone tells them to stay together,
but they don't.
One child disappears
into the laughter.
Another child
won't stop crying.
He is afraid of the stairs.

A reminder as we discuss AI safety: Deregulation (or allowing corporations to "self regulate") only masks another kind of trickle-down economics — one where the financial gains go to the top, and nothing trickles down except risks and losses for everyone else.
