“Thank you for the good intentions.” A poem by Nicanor Parra, translated by Patricia Rachal.
PONCHARTRAIN CAUSEWAY

Excuse me, I am extremely sorry
I have nothing to do with these unforgettable bridges
I admit they are long. Infinite? O.K., infinite
But I have very little to do with these beautiful sunsets.
Thank you for the sandwiches and the Cokes
Thank you for the good intentions
(And also the bad ones)
My stomach is full of joy:
Can't you hear the thundering of the guts?
As long as there is nobody to prove the contrary
I will go on calling myself myself.

Fuck ChatGPT flyers. The future is broadsheets.
A crowded broadsheet with way too many fonts. It says:

Say it with
Broadsheets
Unlimited fonts
Stretch them
Or cram a really long sentence into one line for no good reason
No whitespace
Mix capital and lowercase
Pointing hands

For me, there's no better way into close reading than memorizing poetry. I notice things about the mechanics of each poem I've memorized without effort/conscious analysis, simply as a byproduct of finding the words over & over in my brain/mouth. (Also a great antidote to doomscrolling/rumination.)

Put another way, to be legible enough for AI to be useful to most families, they would have to stop communicating as the family they have known, never had to overtly think about, and become something stranger and coarser that has no cultural foundation. Why would I do that?

Yes, the precondition for regular AI agent use is changing your culture to speak in middle America white bureaucratic language to make it work. You can’t put “the good collards“ on an optimized shopping list, much less account for what some call familect: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/03/m...

In honor of the final day of the Emily Dickinson Marathon, a throwback to the time I translated a quotation about Jair Bolsonaro being a weirdo as though it were a Dickinson poem (specifically, as though it were the 4th and 5th stanzas of F900, “Twas awkward, but it fitted me - “

A poem a week for the month of October! I might cheat and count this, from Emily Dickinson, for week 1 since I just memorized it in the last week or so.

We grow accustomed to the Dark -
When Light is put away -
As when the Neighbor holds the Lamp
To witness her Good bye -

A Moment - We uncertain step
For newness of the night -
Then - fit our Vision to the Dark -
And meet the Road - erect -

And so of larger - Darknesses -
Those Evenings of the Brain -
When not a Moon disclose a sign -
Or Star - come out - within -

The Bravest - grope a little -
And sometimes hit a Tree
Directly in the Forehead -
But as they learn to see -

Either the Darkness alters -
Or something in the sight
Adjusts itself to Midnight -
And Life steps almost straight.

Emily Dickinson on a worm: “Pink lank and warm” (F1742)
In Winter in my Room
I came upon a Worm
Pink lank and warm
But as he was a worm
And worms presume
Not quite with him at home
Secured him by a string
To something neighboring
And went along -
A Trifle afterward
A thing occurred
I'd not believe it if I heard
But state with creeping blood
A snake with mottles rare
Surveyed my chamber floor
In feature as the worm before
But ringed with power
The very string with which
I tied him - too
When he was mean and new
That string was there -I shrank - "How fair you are"!
Propitiation's Claw -
"Afraid he hissed
Of me"?
"No Cordiality" -
He fathomed me -
Then to a Rhythm Slim
Secreted in his Form
As Patterns swim
Projected him.
That time I flew
Both eyes his way
Lest he pursue
Nor ever ceased to run
Till in a distant Town
Towns on from mine
I set me down
This was a dream -

“Where bloodroot and belladonna insist.” A poem by Charles Wright.
Stone Canyon Nocturne

BY CHARLES WRIGHT

Ancient of Days, old friend, no one believes you'll come back.
No one believes in his own life anymore.

The moon, like a dead heart, cold and unstartable, hangs by a thread
At the earth's edge,
Unfaithful at last, splotching the ferns and the pink shrubs.

In the other world, children undo the knots in their tally strings.
They sing songs, and their fingers blear.

And here, where the swan hums in his socket, where bloodroot
And belladonna insist on our comtorting,
Where the fox in the canyon wall empties our hands, ecstatic for more,

Like a bead of clear oil the Healer revolves through the night wind,
Part eye, part tear, unwilling to recognize us.

The Fort Worth Zoo is one of the few programs to successfully breed Texas horned lizards (Phrynosoma cornutum) in captivity, with the first zoo-reared group hatched in 2005. They've been so successful, they've been able to release them back into the wild to bolster declining wild populations.

The Dallas Zoo & Fort Worth Zoo, both wonderful programs, are working with Texas Parks & Wildlife to restore wild populations of Texas horned lizards (Phrynosoma cornutum) via zoo breed & release programs. 2026 is already a RECORD year: > 1000 lizards released, with documented wild-born babies.
A gloved human hand holds a round plastic container like you might put a salad in, but there are teeny-tiny horned lizards all alert looking and fierce inside.

"Aaand off they go!
Yesterday, 116 Texas horned lizards started their exciting journey to be released into the wild. Our team has worked tirelessly since their hatching to ensure these little ones are fully prepped and ready for this big moment. Stay tuned for more details on their release!
Our Texas horned lizard conservation program is a collaborative effort with Texas Parks and Wildlife, Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation, and several of our dedicated zoo partners."An adult horned toad sitting in sandy dirt in West Texas, with a mix of native shrubs and non-native grasses in the background. From my table this week, Charred Eggplant Salad (in Reem Assil’s Arabiyya). You know it’s good when the page has a greasy stain on it!
BABA GHANOUJ
Charred Eggplant Salad

4–6 servings
THIS IS A bright, creamy, pomegranate-eggplant salad, but hold the tahini, please. It's a mystery why baba ghanouj, one of our most widely known dishes, is so different in the United States from that in the Arab world. When we talk about baba ghanouj in the Levant, we are referring to a tart salad of creamy roasted eggplant, brightened with pomegranate molasses and flecked with tomatoes—which is what this is!

If you're looking for an eggplant spread made with garlic and tahini, you'll find recipes under mutabal. Eat this baba ghanouj w/ bread, or it's also delicious as a side salad.

2 large globe eggplants (~2 pounds)
Olive oil, for rubbing eggplants, +more for drizzling
2 garlic cloves, minced
¼ cup lemon juice (~2 lemons)
Zest of 2 lemons
½ tsp ground cumin
1 tsp kosher salt, +more as needed
1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1 sm Roma tomato, finely diced
½ red bell pepper, finely diced
½ red onion, finely diced
1 T coarsely chopped parsley
1 tsp pomegranate molasses

Cook eggplants directly on the burner of a gas stove or in the oven. On a gas stove, sear directly over a med-high flame. Rotate every 5 min until the globes are completely blackened, ~15 min total. Alternately, preheat oven to 450°F. Place eggplants on a sheet tray, poke all over w/ a fork, rub w/ oil, place the tray in the oven & cook 25–30 min, until the eggplants collapse in on themselves, & skins are blackened.
Place cooked eggplants in a bowl; seal w/ plastic wrap to let the eggplants steam in their own juices.
In a medium bowl, combine garlic, lemon juice & zest, cumin, salt, black pepper.
When eggplants have cooled enough to touch, split lengthwise. Using a spoon, scrape out the pulp, discarding the skins and stems. For milder flavor, remove seeds.
Use a fork to mash pulp into the lemon-garlic mix. Fold in tomato, bell pepper, onion.
Salt to taste.
To serve, scoop onto serving plate, drizzle w/ olive oil, garnish w/ parsley & molasses.Glistening eggplant salad, studded with peppers, tomatoes, scallions, and pomegranate seeds, garnished with chopped mint and parsley.
