You can't have functional cities dominated by cars, car culture, and driver violence. Conservatives and Republicans know this. They defend violent car culture as a primary, root source of political conservativism/fascism. The fact that there are still folks on left who defend it is ... weird.

I think we're within a few years of Democrats/liberals/leftists being forced to make a hard choice between coddling violent drivers in our cities -- blocking traffic enforcement, defending "free" parking, saying $75,000 cars are for the "working class" -- and realizing those are fascist positions.

Napa County has a huge drunk driving problem. The county average twice the DUI injuries by population as the Bay Area average. With all that drinking up there, they should consider better transit. www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti...

There actually is. Norway realized they could not achieve either street safety or climate goals if they prioritized EVs. EVs have to come after human needs. I see little hope of that ever happening in the U.S. Or, even, Germany, or Italy, or France.

The countries that are most serious about climate and electric cars -- well, really, country, singular -- is Norway, which has both strict EV mandates AND as a matter of math and policy has already realized EVs are not a climate solution. So, they're radically reducing driving in cities.

Matthew Lewis -- living in the era of cults and consequences @mateosfo.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
EVs are only as clean as a) the grid, and b) the steel and other materials they're built with. EV advocates claim the carbon payback for an EV is less than 5 years -- but that's only if the EV is driven the max 15,000 miles a year. so, yes, they are advocating for more driving and car dependence.

Halloween is one of the deadliest days of the year for American children, as violent drivers mow them down, with impunity, across the country. It's pathetic that most cities won't follow what Mayor Mamdani is doing, but it says a lot about the values of the typical U.S. Mayor.

This is another shibboleth. Car ownership is not equal to pollution. A gasoline car driven 10 miles a week pollutes less than an electric car driven 100 miles a week.

Matthew Lewis -- living in the era of cults and consequences @mateosfo.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
you didn't read either of the papers. why is that?
030
Matthew Lewis -- living in the era of cults and consequences @mateosfo.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
sure. but a gasoline car driven 10 miles once a week because its owners mostly walk is less polluting than an electric car driven 10 miles every day. this is another problem with EV advocacy is they deny the simple physics of climate pollution.

it's 14 years and most americans never buy a new car in their lives. an even worse evil propagated by EV advocates is a fundamental misunderstanding of how cars and housing and cities work.

VMT is in secular decline, in spite of NIMBYism and crushing housing shortage, because Americans hate driving. What EV advocacy is trying to do, practically, is mandate driving, and block infill housing - because EVs are not a climate solution. They're a salve for suburbanites and carmakers.

It's important to note that the goal of electric car advocacy is therefore not addressing climate, but rather, maintaining the car industry's iron death grip on our cities and politics. Because Americans don't want new cars. We want to drive fewer miles. EV advocates think we're wrong.
1232
Matthew Lewis -- living in the era of cults and consequences @mateosfo.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The fallacy of the climate movement's electric car advocacy is belief it's faster to get people into EVs than into walkable homes where they can drive less. The reality is it's probably ten times faster to build homes in walkable neighborhoods than to convince people to buy electric cars.

US isn’t taking climate change seriously when it comes to transport policy Other countries are demonstrating that they can (1) mode shift toward transit, walk, bike; (2) electrify; (3) densify. US failing on all fronts. Result is that US emissions from transport aren’t falling as they should
