DINOv2 has never seen a caption, and Qwen3 has never seen an image. We still aligned their embedding spaces without a single image-caption pair. It even works when the images and the captions come from different datasets. Project page: dominik-schnaus.github.io/unpaired-rosetta ⬇️

Some months ago, I wrote a skeptical reply to a commentary on bots in online studies in PNAS, arguing that no evidence yet exists for such bots. Together with the authors of the original commentary, we now show that bots can pass (almost?) all online cognitive studies with human-like performance 1/n

Radical approaches are going to be essential. I guess institutions will have lethargy to move without substantial consensus amongst senior folks; we need more PIs to express their thoughts on this publicly so the common "signs of change" would become explicit.

My bet is that no vision encoder can solve this by itself (at least not the current crop even after scaling up). As I understand it human shape perception relies on much more than ventral stream and possibly on "deliberative" systems (so PFC, etc. involved) — sounds like a complex network.

That's great to know! Classically-trained resnets are way more expressive (performance higher, downstream transfer higher) so I am not surprised :)

AI-as-collaborator might be a useful (inevitable) thing. And for efficiency reasons atleast, structuring papers better might help (ofc verifiable structure would also reduce hallucination etc.) AI swarms doing science (like the NS example) is a different game (also inevitable; but annoying yes)

Cool stuff :) I'm curious if shape-biased models close the gap meaningfully; see the examples in www.nature.com/articles/s42... The tested networks are quite biased towards texture (or at least not as strongly biased towards shape as humans are); I wonder if that alone is enough said divergence.

I think both can co-exist: normal papers as we write them (I definitely love printing papers out and reading and annotating them; sitting with them) and these highly-structured forms (perhaps journals could automate that conversion?)

I think one of the reasons people are doing this is to make it easier for agents to digest papers. Think of it as including an insane amount of metadata with the paper (or structuring it for easy/fast parsing with JSONs, etc.).

I was pretty chuffed about science when the doctors at NYU figured out why my face had gone numb and I had lost the ability to speak and swallow. They turned to the scientific literature, which guided them through keeping me from dying from a rare disorder and regaining the ability to speak and eat.
