Advances in medicine, from genomics to biomarkers to artificial intelligence, have provided us with predictive tools that allow us to peer into our medical future in ways that once seemed inconceivable. But with the technology comes an array of serious ethical questions. cnn.it/46fIdfX

If you are a news outlet/ #book reviewer/ #bookclub and you passed on the book about the summer’s biggest privacy, policing, surveillance story, I don’t blame you. I, too, am surprised about the anti-Flock news. But the issues are harder and more nuanced. It’s all here. nyupress.org/978147983829...

I spent years writing a book about the importance of anonymous speech from our nation’s founding through modern times. Today’s Meta settlement is a huge - and possibly fatal - setback to the ability to speak anonymously online.

AI is alarming for many reasons: it's a dangerous financial bubble, an environmental catastrophe, and a tool for eroding wages and labor power. But in addition to all that, AI is an epistemic disaster. 1/
The North Pole at night, hand-tinted in blues and purples so it looks more like a moonscape. Protruding from the ice is the cross-sectioned head and neck of a man, his brains on display. Stepping over the leftmost mountains is a killer pulp robot, about to crush the head. Leaning against the rightmost mountains is a sneering, princely toff in a red frock coat, holding a cane that has penetrated the decapitated skull and lodged in the brains.

If you are focused on Flock in your communities, can I interest you in real-time crime centers, video analytics, drones, sensors, or other pattern-matching and tracking technologies. A narrow focus on ALPRs obscures the other equally pervasive and panoptic policing technologies in use.

Meta is a bad company but this is a really bad decision. Please don't applaud it. It's predicated on an unsound view of liability that will show up in places where it will suppress other activity we want to foster online.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a snail climbs up onto a frisbee laying in the grass. The snail says, “what a strange flower…” Panel 2: the frisbee is lifted off the ground by a person standing outside of the frame. The snail, still perched on the edge of the frisbee, remarks, “eh?” Panel 3: the snails eye stalks are blown backwards as it is suddenly thrusted forward. From the snail’s perspective, it looks like stars stretching radially from the center, as if traveling at warp speed.

The new federal comprehensive privacy bill would be an enormous step backwards. It reuses tired lame approaches that don't work. It lacks rigor. It's just a gift to companies that want to gather and use data without accountability. And it preempts better state laws. Yuck! iapp.org/news/a/us-re...
