This is Lovey's favorite Miss Dolly book (so far). If you have never seen one, they are incredibly high quality, sturdy books and have these wonderful prompts and cues for the adults as well. All of the money she spent, doing just this, and no one anywhere could place a value on it.

For the first reading, curl up with your child and read the book together. Enjoy. For the next readings, here are some ideas for activities to do with your child. Don't try to do everything each time you read it. And most of all, have fun and enjoy sharing the story with your child.

STARTING UP

Use a low, gruff voice when reading the title. Have your child repeat it in the same low voice.

Ask your child to point to the buffalo's eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and horns. Is he smiling or not?

READING THE STORY

Have your child puff out their chest to be as big as possible when Buffalo Fluffalo was big. When he was small, have them pull their arms in tight.

When all the creatures cover ol' Fluff with kisses and hugs, give your child kisses and hugs, telling them, "You're hugly and snugly kissable!"

AFTER THE STORY

Ask your child questions about the story.

When Buffalo Fluffalo was a big, fluffy animal shouting at the other creatures, did he seem happy or angry? What about at the end, when he is surrounded by friends?

Do you sometimes feel grumpy and gruff? What makes you happy?

Learning on the Go:

Use stuffed animals to reenact the story, with one being grumbly like Buffalo Fluffalo and the others being friendly and helping him.

Have your child draw two pictures, one of a time they were angry like Buffalo at the beginning of the story and another of a time they were happy.
