This year's El Niño continues its climb into uncharted waters; Niño3.4 region anomalies are now at a 3.4C above normal (how fitting!), higher than any prior El Niño event on record. September monthly Niño3.4 anomalies also set a record at 2.9C (beating 2015 and 1877's 2.75C).

A lot of the time they follow or at least overlap with the rail network: doubling the impact by not just connecting small villages to one another via active travel, but also expanding the catchment of rail stations. Win-win for sustainable transport overall.

👇 A really nice photo diary of a brand new rural #Doorfiets route in the Netherlands - routes connecting small villages and towns to one another (& importantly connecting more rural locations to their nearest rail station 🚆🚲). ⭕ Red marks the route in @bicycledutch.bsky.social's photos, I think!
Map of completed and planned "Doorfiets" routes in the Netherlands - "continuous cycling" routes that are built between settlements, rather than just inside urban areas. Green routes are completed as of 2024, with orange routes under construction. Grey routes are for the future, and a red circle marks the route talked about in the linked blog.

Actually, I've got decent photos of the neighbourhood. Once industrial & railyard land, then unused scrubland for decades. An entire new housing district has been built here, with an incredible new walking and cycling boulevard on the main street (Zygmunta Krasińskiego) [Info in alt text]
A family ride their bikes on a newly opened walking and cycle path that weaves along Zygmunta Krasińskiego street in the Żoliborz area of Warsaw, Poland. The whole area used to be industrial and railyard land, then unused scrubland for decades. It's now a new residential district with new apartment blocks, shops, and plenty of outside spaces like this running along main streets.Looking the other way down Zygmunta Krasińskiego street in Warsaw, as the sun begins to set. A couple walk together on a wide footpath, surrounded by new greenery and planting. The whole linear park follows the street for about 500 metres, providing a cycle path that connects to side streets and main arterial routes. The amount of planting is incredible, with plenty of benches and creative play areas for children every 50 metres or so down the route.

Admittedly I'm going through the dregs of my camera roll here - but something I spotted everywhere in the newer neighbourhoods of Warsaw: cycle repair stations outside loads of shops. A sign of how central cycling is becoming, that businesses (even big chains) are chasing customers on two wheels.

City Centre: bikes now 1 in 3 in rush hour

A Spokes traffic count in George Street and Princes Street on 24 September found bikes forming over 30% of all vehicles in the morning peak period, and over 20% at lunchtime. Other findings suggest a major boost to bike travel thanks to the Council’s Voi bike hire scheme.

Our count was conducted to add concrete evidence to current uncertainties over the future of both streets, with Princes Street likely to remain 4 lanes of tarmac for the some years to come and no funding available for the ambitious but extremely costly George Street proposals for a semi-pedestrianised ‘cycle street’ (albeit with significant motor traffic at times!). The money which had been intended for George Street will now go to repaving Princes Street footways with high-cost materials in what Cllr Lang termed a “glorified resurfacing project.”

Thus, whichever east-west route best suits a cyclist’s journey, Princes Street or George Street, cycling conditions in both look set to remain dire, with a major central gap remaining in CCWEL, the Council’s City Centre West-East Link, unless the Council thinks again.map showing CCWEL missing link along George Streettable of main results

That box shape was just a quick way of showing the scale. The actual shape of the zone is a lot more crooked, but basically most streets inside that box have bollards and other filters, preventing through-traffic. It's a bit easier to see the specific car-free streets on Google Maps.
Looking at the centre of Ljubljana on Google Maps, with thin lines denoting streets without vehicle traffic.Looking down one such traffic-free street in central Ljubljana (Ciril-Metodov trg). Bollards can be seen making the start of the car-free zone.

A snap going the other way (into town) this morning. I was about midway in the queue, with about as many people behind me. This was around 8.45am, so some time after the *actual* peak, which seems to be around 8.15am.
My view from the middle of a queue of cycle traffic, waiting to cross at traffic lights on the South City Way cycle route in the south of Glasgow, around 8.45am this morning. The city centre is up ahead.

There's something amazing about being in a peloton of 40+ bikes on the cycle lane heading home. Every driver at the front of a queue of side-street traffic... every person peering out of a bus window... every passer-by gets the message: "Oh wow, yeah, people are using this stuff". Never gets old.
My view travelling home by bike: Loads of people cycling on the South City Way cycle lane on Victoria Road in Govanhill in the Southside of Glasgow, during evening rush hour. A woman in front of me wears an incredibly fetching gold coloured helmet.
