90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

What you're saying when you say "DEI" when universities say "EDI" (as happens here) and vice versa. And why it actually matters. The great majority of UK (esp. British) universities use "EDI" while US universities use "DEI". Is that "just" semantic, or does it matter? A thread. 🧵1/8

What is happening in United States is what happens when coercive powers of the state - arrest, detention, charges - are used as ends in themselves, and not as means of serving justice. They know the arrests and charges will not stick, but they don’t care. Intimidation, like cruelty, is the point.

10 prevalent misconceptions regarding asylum hotels, clarified and refuted with accurate information for you to share, particularly if you are sick of hearing the same tired and often racially motivated arguments. from Community Integration and Advocacy Centre via @westcountryvoices.bsky.social 🙏🏻
❶ “They’re living in luxury hotels at our expense!”
Fact: These accommodations typically comprise budget hotels or repurposed facilities. The rooms are basic, frequently cramped, lacking kitchen access, and providing limited privacy.

❷ “They get £40 a day spending money.”
Fact: Asylum seekers residing in hotels receive approximately £9.58 per week in cash, equating to about £1.37 daily—insufficient to cover even fundamental necessities.

❸ “They’re taking hotel rooms from paying guests.”
Fact: The government specifically contracts hotels that often have available capacity or are unsuitable for typical guests. Most were not fully booked prior to their use.

❹ “They should be working to pay for their stay.”
Fact: Asylum seekers are prohibited from working while their claims are being processed—a policy decision rather than a personal choice.

❺ “They’re just waiting around doing nothing.”
Fact: The majority of asylum seekers aim to contribute positively. Many engage in volunteering, learning English, or participating in community organisations, despite facing significant uncertainty.❻ “We’re spending millions on them!”
Fact: The high costs associated with hotel use stem from a broken and backlogged asylum system, not from the individuals utilising it. Delays perpetuate a state of limbo, resulting in increased long-term expenses.

❼ “They’re given better treatment than our homeless.”
Fact: Asylum seekers are housed in hotels due to the government’s legal obligation to accommodate them. Homelessness is a distinct and also underfunded issue; one should not be used to justify neglect of the other.

❽ “They’re all men of fighting age.”
Fact: Asylum hotels also house families, women, and children. The narrative surrounding “fighting-age males” is often intended to incite fear rather than accurately represent the situation.

❾ “They could have stayed in a safe country.”
Fact: International law does not mandate claiming asylum in the first safe country encountered. Individuals arrive in the UK for various reasons—language preferences, family connections, historical ties, or safety concerns elsewhere.

𝟏𝟎 “They’re pretending to be refugees to get free stuff.”
Fact: The vast majority of asylum seekers are legitimate refugees fleeing war, torture, and persecution. Their claims undergo individual assessments based on stringent criteria.

Asylum seekers residing in hotels are not leading luxurious lives—they are enduring hardships while awaiting safety. The core issue lies not with those occupying the hotels, but rather with the prolonged circumstances that have led them there.

From the United Nations Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity Country visit to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (24 April – 5 May 2023) On the EHRC’s anti trans campaign:
22. In a meeting with the EHRC on 4 May 2023, the Independent Expert was shocked to hear that the EHRC offered that advice without itself having any definition of 'biological sex'; UK law provides no such definition either. The EHRC however specifically conceded that, in the context of the letter, the intended meaning of the term "biological sex" is to define women as "women who are not trans." As one
Commissioner elaborated: "under the Equality Act, [...] a trans woman who does have a GRC is a woman under the current case law. [...] if the government decides to make the amendment, they don't need to define biological sex, they can do it by way of exclusion of the GRA." It then follows that the objective of the EHRC was to offer the Government a formula through which it could carry out discriminatory distinctions currently unlawful under UK law, and that will remain so under international human rights law. The Independent Expert is of the opinion that this action of the EHRC is wholly unbecoming of an institution created to "stand up for those in need of protection and hold governments to account for their human rights obligations" (mission statement, EHRC webpage; emphasis added).
