I know that the periodical market & book markets are two different things, but when we’re talking about the landscape of children’s literature they’re the same thing. Comics *are* the story.

At its peak The Beano was selling 1.5 million copies a week. Even now The Beano’s sales figures are around 55k a week, which comfortably outstrips the vast majority number 1 bestsellers. If memory serves me correctly, The Phoenix states they’ve overtaken The Beano.

I keep thinking about how we really should reframe the story of children’s literature in the UK. For the last 85 years the story of children’s literature in this country is the story of UK children’s comics, and their less successful cousin, prose.

Speaking with a dad at one of my son’s clubs earlier today. He was very much into watching sports, which made me realise that the only sport I’ve ever been interested in watching was Total Wipeout.

One of them I’ve talked so much about that it’s pretty obvious what it is. The other one is absolutely wild, and I think that it might be unlike anything else out there.

I distinctly remember it being the negative spaces that freaked me out so much in Not Now, Bernard (without knowing that‘s what they were at the time). It felt like (& still does) there’s a suffocating horror to the openness of them. I still can’t read the book to this day.

Mark Bradley @markbradley.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I can’t remember which came first, but it’s either the Bright Eyes sequence in Watership Down, or the whole of Haunted House by Jan Pienkowski & Not Now, Bernard by David McKee.

I genuinely can’t think of a work that sums up our current age more than Richard E Grant declaring ‘I’m a traitor’ in front of a large group of people, who then convince themselves that he can’t be because he said it #thetraitors

I really wish that people would cut to the chase and just admit that have to make this commentary of a functional plot element from a 90 year old pulp story a load bearing structure of their critical outlook because they are unable to affect an meaningful change in the world.

The fun thing is that they absolutely knocked it out the park with the digest sized versions of Spider-Man ❤️ Mary Jane & Runaways. Genuinely brilliant idea before Scholastic properly nailed it that size matters for shelving in bookshops. And then Marvel did nothing with that revelation.

We as a society REALLY spent decades thinking BATMAN '66 was the shame of comics media because a bunch of man babies demanded they be taken seriously when folks who made their "superior, mature Dark Knight" adored it

There’s a handful, but here’s the thing: Marvel is simply really friggin‘ bad at publishing, so has never really pursued it. Say what you will about DC (& there’s SO much bad to say), but at least they had Vertigo, Minx, Zuda, etc. They at least try new stuff, formats and approaches.

I am once again simply asking critics to acknowledge both that children exist & that people make media for them.

Mark Bradley @markbradley.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
This, but also: Something I’ve seen in schools is a lack of depth to children’s 20th/21st C knowledge. Like, in the 80’s/90’s/00’s you still had exposure to media from 50+ years ago, so knew about what the world sort of looked like to older generarions (granted through the filter of mass media).
