I distinctly remember it being the negative spaces that freaked me out so much in Not Now, Bernard (without knowing that‘s what they were at the time). It felt like (& still does) there’s a suffocating horror to the openness of them. I still can’t read the book to this day.

As that ‘how to quit social media/bluesky‘ article is going round, I thought I’d recommend this - it’s one of the Brick devices. I got one a couple of weeks ago, and I’ve gone from over an hour a day on here to 5 minutes a day. It’s really, really great.

Emberley’s approach is to start each book with a handful of basic shapes, which he then goes on to show you how to use to replicate every drawing in the book, and then create your own. It’s super endearing and will empower everyone to feel they can draw.

Actually, on the subject of comics in the classroom: One big hurdle I’ve found is teachers lacking confidence in drawing. I cannot recommend Ed Emberley’s how to draw books enough for this. He has a whole range, but Make A World & Faces are the two I’d start with.

I’ve attached the full quote below, and it should be noted that there’s lots of voices in the report who do champion comics. One of the deepest frustrations I have regarding discussions of the role of comics in reading is that so many experts fundamentally don’t understand what they are critiquing.

I finally got the last couple of pieces through to make the very Baba Yaga‘s hut inspired section of the Dreamzzz Never Witch’s Midnight Raven set, and it is making me very happy :)
