A Tale of Two Panthers — Back on Their Pedestals! 🐆👑

Sanssouci Park in Potsdam is full of secrets, and these two magnificent panthers have a story to tell.

In the mid-C19, King Frederick William IV commissioned two panther sculptures designed by August Kiss. The king dreamed of bringing a touch of Italy to Potsdam, and his magnificent Orangery Palace became part of that vision. In Greek mythology, panthers accompanied Dionysus, the god of wine and celebration. An appropriate choice for a landscape of vineyards and gardens!

Originally displayed at the nearby Winzerberg, the panthers eventually found themselves high on the Orangery terraces in 1861. However, war damage and decades of deterioration left them so badly damaged, they had to be removed.

Seventy years later, in 2019, a reconstruction using surviving fragments, historical photographs and old foundry drawings brought the pair back to life. The new sculptures, cast in aluminium, reclaimed their positions. Apparently, some creatures simply refuse to stay down! 😉🐆

Our photograph captures a peaceful street scene on a bright, sunny morning in the United Kingdom, beneath a vast, deep-blue sky without a cloud in sight.
