Gimme Shelter Storm light over the Dolomites at dusk. Cold, damp, and the range kept vanishing into cloud and coming back. Moody is exactly what it felt like out there. #EastCoastKin #Photography #Fuji #PhotographersofBlueSky #PhotographersUnited #Scape #landscapephotography
A wide, dark mountain scene under a heavy sky. At left, a tall rock peak with a jagged summit rises out of shadow, and a cluster of narrow serrated spires sits just to its right, their tips cut sharply against the cloud. A band of pale fog drifts diagonally from the base of the spires toward the right edge, softening the ridges behind it. A near-black ridge fills the lower third. The sky is thick slate-blue and charcoal cloud, with streaks of salmon-orange light glowing across the upper left and center, and one small patch of pale blue near the top left corner. At the lower right edge, a few tiny figures stand on a pale path.

The image is low-key, built on a split between warm and cool. The orange light is the only bright note, and the blue-black rock and cloud keep everything else subdued. Layers of fog and haze separate the spires from the ridges behind them and give the range depth without any foreground subject. The diagonal fog band leads the eye across the dark mass, and the small figures at the edge give the peaks their scale. The mood is brooding and unsettled, close to the tradition of the Romantic mountain landscape.

Photo taken by @rjrock.bsky.social & processed by me (brief process in alt). #ECK #EastCoastKin #PostProcess I struggled a bit with this one, much like last time we did #Silence
Black and white photo of Santa Cristina Gherdëina in Italy. The village appears silent, with nobody on the streets and no cars on the roads. The only signs of life are a few lights coming from buildings, and lights on the exterior of some buildings, the brightest of which illuminate the exterior of the Parish Church of Santa Cristina. The photo was taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and was processed by me.

The image was edited in Darktable…

I cropped the image to focus on a small portion of the village to eliminate parts of the village in which people could be seen (hopefully I’ve removed them all?!), to give the village a sense of silence.

Then I upped the exposure a little in the Exposure Module (only the tiniest smidge, so little the slider barely looked to have moved) to make as much of the village visible.

Then I activated the Colour Calibration module and converted the image to black and white, going against my usual norm and using the Fuji Acros 100 preset for once, because it gave, to my eye, the most pleasing results.

Then I activated the Denoise (profiled) module. Like the exposure module, I only moved the strength slider a smidge. The reason being two fold—if you go too far the image becomes soft, or even outright blurry, and—very much a personal preference thing, but—I don’t like all the noise to be digitally removed, to me images feel kinda soulless when that's done.

Last Call for Gelato closing time at a gelateria on lake garda. a terrace full of empty chairs and one guy still studying the sundaes. no rush. it's gelato. #EastCoastKin #Photography #Leica #PhotographersofBlueSky #PhotographersUnited #urbangaze #humansofbluesky

A night street scene outside a corner gelateria. The upper third is a dark apartment building with iron balconies; one balcony doorway glows faint orange. Below, an awning shelters a terrace crowded with round dark tables and molded armchairs, alternating bright red and pale grey-blue, all empty. A thick dark pillar stands just left of center, dividing the terrace. To its right, through open glass walls, the shop interior blazes warm orange and yellow, hung with sundae posters. A man in a dark cap, glasses, and zip jacket stands alone inside, facing a lit picture of a sundae. At far right, a gelato case glows beneath a neon sign reading Gelati in white script edged in red, blue, and green, beside a vertical take-away sign in Italian, English, and German. Worn stone pavers fill the foreground.

The pillar splits the frame into two stages: a dim, emptied terrace on the left and a lit room on the right, where the only person in the scene stands. The repeated red and blue chairs read as one quiet crowd of absent customers, which makes the single figure carry the image. Warm interior light pulls forward against the cool neon and blue seating, directing attention inside. Placed against the sundae he appears to be considering, the man becomes a small, gently comic note of appetite and indecision at the end of the night.

Yellow Suede Shoes this guy owned the promenade on lake garda. einstein hair, yellow sneakers, and plenty to say. i want to be like him when i grow up. #EastCoastKin #Photography #Leica #PhotographersofBlueSky #PhotographersUnited #urbangaze #humansofbluesky

A lakeside promenade at night. In the lower center, an older man sits alone on a slatted dark bench, legs crossed, a black leather bag in his lap and a phone in one hand. A great cloud of white curly hair frames his face; he wears amber-framed glasses, a cream sweater over a denim collar, rolled dark jeans, yellow socks, and bright yellow sneakers. His mouth is open as if mid-sentence, eyes turned to his right. Behind him, dense beds of burgundy coleus and red and pink flowers fill the left side of the frame, beside a tall black lamppost and a sculpted, cloud-pruned tree. Other people sit along a low stone wall that runs diagonally toward the water. Across the dark lake, a hillside town glows with hotels, a green-lit sign, palms, and a bell tower, its lights stretched into long rippling reflections of white, green, gold, and blue. The sky above is black. Pale stone pavers fan across the foreground.

The man is the anchor of a layered night scene: flowers in front, his bench in the middle, the lit shoreline behind. His white hair separates cleanly from the dark surroundings, and the yellow sneakers answer the cool blue of the bench and wall, pulling the eye down and back to his face. Caught mid-speech, he reads as a local holding his spot while the evening passes around him, a portrait built on personality rather than pose.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo today. The clouds never let go of the towers, and a pair of alpine choughs rode the wind along the walls like it was nothing. Worth the drive. #EastCoastKin #Photography #ClassicMono #Leica #PhotographersofBlueSky #PhotographersUnited #landscapephotography
Black and white photograph looking up at three sheer rock towers of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo in the Dolomites. A massive vertical wall fills the left third of the frame, near black, its surface scored with fine horizontal layers and vertical cracks. Behind it, a second tower rises through drifting mist, its summit lost in cloud, and a third, fainter still, sits lower on the right. The upper and right portions of the frame are a churning sky of cloud, dark gray masses broken by a bright white opening just right of center. Low on the dark wall at left, two small black birds, alpine choughs, glide side by side with wings spread, so small against the rock they are easy to miss.

The image builds depth through atmosphere rather than a foreground: each tower is lighter and softer than the one in front of it, so the mountains seem to step back into the weather. The diagonal of their edges runs from lower right to upper center and hands the eye to the bright gap in the clouds. The two birds are the scale reference, and their near invisibility against the stone is the point, a statement of how large and indifferent this place is. The mood is closer to nineteenth-century romantic landscape than to a modern one.

A dark rock face, textured with cracks and ledges, cuts in from the upper left and leans across the left edge of the frame, its lower portion fading into mist. The rest of the frame is cloud in every shade from charcoal to bright white, with dark pockets scattered through lighter billows. Near the center, two alpine choughs fly in the same direction toward the right, both in crisp black silhouette. Their wings are spread wide enough that individual flight feathers show at the tips, and their fanned tails are clearly visible.

Where a wider view of the same place makes the birds nearly vanish, this frame makes them the subject. Sharp black shapes against soft gray cloud give a strong figure and ground relationship, and their shared heading and spacing read as a pair moving together. The cliff edge at upper left keeps the mountain present as a reminder of scale without competing. The effect is buoyant rather than ominous: the weather is heavy, but the birds are completely at home in it.

First go at the #PostProcess challenge. #ECK #Silence #BlueHour
My attempt at finding stillness and silence by editing a high contrast, noisier version of this image. I played around with color grading and other Lightroom tools to achieve this slightly muted, twilight scene. I love that there is still a hint of pink in the clouds and a warm glow from the church and houses on the hill. I think I could sleep very peacefully in this hillside Italian village.

A town on a mountain side at night.

For this challenge, I tried to "silence" the scene by cropping out the green vegetation in the foreground and some of the cloud texture in the upper sky. I tried to simplify the color palette to orange and purplish blue. I focused on the town by creating a radial mask and lifting the shadows, increasing color saturation and clarity. I created a linear gradient mask at the bottom of the photo to dim the lights in the valley by reducing exposure, highlights, clarity and texture. Likewise, I created a mask for the clouds and reduced exposure, highlights, texture and clarity.

Evening #BlueSky 🫖 Inspired by William Blake (more in the Alt on that one) #ForJanet For challenge #PostProcess #Silence #ECK Original photo by @rjrock.bsky.social Achieved using SnapSeed & LightRoom. Info #AltText Have a great rest of your day my freinds ☺️
As usual, an outstanding original Rock image to work with and thank you my friend for that ☺️

That’s first talk about the thought process before the actual process.

To bring silence to this magnificent capture you first have to identify what brings the volume, the noise.

The town itself is peaceful and at night time so, I turned to the sky which is ominous, powerful and spoke the most loudly to me.

As William Blake once wrote “A robin redbreast in a cage puts all heaven in a rage."

So, let’s release that Robin shall we? #ForJanet ❤️

First of all, I went into Google images and found a nice Star field sky that I thought might fit this capture.

I then took rocks original image into Snapseed and then overlayed it with this new Google image using the double exposing feature to match it as best l could.

Then took the entire new image back into Lightroom and started doing free hand liner masks to separate the sky and the town below.

I attempted the best I could to try and blend the two together even to the point where I had to zoom right in and try and re-create the tree line at the very back.

I then use some vignetting to hide anything that I’ve missed in the edit, lens corrections and deepened the detail generally.

I then finished with my usual white border frame.

Get Off of My Cloud Hay barn on the Alpe di Siusi, Sassopiatto behind it. I've spent most of my life around Colorado mountains and nothing back home is shaped like this. #EastCoastKin #Photography #ClassicMono #Fuji #PhotographersofBlueSky #PhotographersUnited #MountainMonday #Stunday
A black-and-white landscape in a wide horizontal frame. On the left, a small wooden hay barn with a pitched roof and vertical board siding stands on short posts at the edge of a sunlit alpine meadow, its front wall in shade. Dark conifers crowd in behind it. Behind the trees rises a massive rock peak: jagged towers on the left give way to a steep cliff, and from the summit a long, smooth slab slopes down to the right toward lower, rounded ridges. Two bright white clouds float directly above the summit, the larger almost touching its tip. The sky is deep gray at the top, lightening toward the horizon. The meadow fills the lower frame, bright and gently rolling, with wild grass and seed heads in the foreground and a band of dark shadow across the bottom right.

The picture is built on a few strong shapes and one repeated angle. The downward slope of the barn's roof runs nearly parallel to the great ramp of the mountain, so the small building and the huge peak read as related forms at very different scales. The cloud stacked over the summit completes a vertical line from sky to rock, while the dark sky and deep shadows give the white of the cloud and the lit grass their full weight. It sits in the tradition of classic black-and-white alpine landscape, where a small human shelter is measured against the mountain.

Photo taken by @rjrock.bsky.social & processed by me (brief process in alt) #ECK #EastCoastKin #PostProcess #Subtraction 1st image was my “proper” attempt. Other 2, my curiosity got me wondering what my—long time tinkering with—WIP ‘daytime glow’ & ‘evening glow’ styles (presets) would look like.
Black and white photo of a train approaching a train station platform. The train is on one of a number of tracks, next to it another train is passing. Beside the tracks, opposite the platform, are a number of industrial buildings. The photo was taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and was processed by me.

The image was edited in Darktable…

I upped the exposure a little in the Exposure module. But only a smidge. I didn’t want to lose the definition of the clouds and upping it more than a smidge blew out the sky.

Then I cropped the image - in all honesty, I did so by playing around with the crop box rather randomly (set to the original image’s aspect ratio) until I got an idea of a crop I liked.

I converted the image to black and white, using the HP5 preset on the Colour Calibration Module (it’s by far the easiest method to convert an image to black and white in Darktable, and it almost always does a good job).

Then I used the Colour Balance RGB module to make small adjustments to the contrast of the image.

I activated the Tone Equaliser module, setting it to ‘strong’.

Then I activated the Local Contrast module, leaving it at its default settings.

Finally, I activated the Filmic module, leaving it at its default settings.Photo of a train approaching a train station platform. The image was edited in Darktable using my ‘daytime glow’ style (preset)…

Then I cropped the image - in all honesty, I did so by playing around with the crop box rather randomly (set to the original image’s aspect ratio) until I got an idea of a crop I liked.

Then I applied my ‘daytime glow’ style:

It activated the Colour Balance RGB module - I then went in and manually made small adjustments to things such as global chroma and saturation based on the image.

Then it activated the Colour Zones module, setting chroma and lightness to a fairly pleasing default - I then went in and made some small adjustments manually.

It then activates the Filmic module, with the settings set to default as that is almost always the best.

It activates the Local Contrast module, with the settings set to default as it’s usually sufficient.

Finally, it added a colour toned graduated density filter in the Graduated Density module - which I went into and made some minor adjustments based on the image.Photo of a train approaching a train station platform. This week's Post Process Challenge is silence. This image has a volume knob. Turn it down. Whatever the original register is, busy, loud, active, or chaotic, find the version that holds still. Silence isn't always soft. A hard-contrast image with a single point of light can be the most silent thing in the room. This is about stillness, not softness.

Harvest Moon Rising harvest moon clearing the ridge in val gardena. the dolomites take a bite out of everything, even the moon. #EastCoastKin #Photography #Fuji #PhotographersofBlueSky #PhotographersUnited #Stunday #classicmono #naturalmomo #astrophotography
A nearly full moon rises from behind a dark mountain ridge, sitting slightly below the center of an otherwise black frame and spanning a little over a third of its width. Only the upper portion of the disc is visible. The ridge is pure black silhouette with no visible detail, and its edge is ragged: a rounded hump of rock on the left, a narrow notch near the center where a sliver of moonlight drops lower between two shoulders of stone, and a flatter, blockier line of towers across the right. The moon is a soft, slightly warm gray-white, its surface rendered in sharp detail: darker gray plains across the upper and right areas, bright rayed craters, and dense pitted texture toward the edges. The sky is solid black, with no stars or clouds.

The image works on one hard contrast: a luminous, finely textured sphere against a featureless black mountain in an empty field. With the land reduced to silhouette, the ridge reads as a cutout rather than terrain, and its broken edge becomes the only line in the frame, giving the moon's smooth geometry something to push against. The wide negative space, especially above, keeps attention on the moment of emergence rather than on setting. It belongs to a long tradition of moonrise photography but trades the usual scenic context for compression and restraint.

Last light on the Odle Santa Maddalena in Val di Funes. The valley went dark first and the peaks held on for a few more minutes. #EastCoastKin #Photography #Fuji #PhotographersofBlueSky #PhotographersUnited #LandscapePhotography #Stunday #ColorADay #OrangeSun
A wide landscape at dusk. A clear blue-violet sky fills the top of the frame. Below it, a long row of jagged limestone spires stretches almost edge to edge, lit coral and orange by the low sun. Their faces are carved with deep vertical gullies, and pale scree fans spill from their bases, where a soft shadow line is creeping up across the rock. Beneath the peaks, steep forested ridges have already fallen into cool blue shadow, sloping in from both sides to form a V that holds the lit mountains. The lower third is bright green pasture rolling over small hills, dotted with farmhouses with dark timber roofs. Left of center stands a small stone church with a tall, pointed clock tower. A few animals graze in the field below it, a paved path curves along the lower left, and dark conifers fill the lower right corner.

The image is built in horizontal bands of alternating temperature: cool sky, warm rock, cool forest, then the green of the valley floor. The warm light on the peaks against the surrounding blues makes the rock advance and gives it weight, while the shadowed ridges frame and contain it. The church tower is the only vertical accent in the lower half, a small pointed form that echoes the spires above and ties the village to the mountains. The difference in scale between the two is the image's quiet argument: settlement small and settled, rock enormous and briefly lit.

Shadow Line, Val di Funes Santa Maddalena and the Odle, Val di Funes. Late sun on the peaks while the ridge below goes into shadow. #EastCoastKin #Photography #Fuji #ColorADay #GreenSat #PhotographersofBlueSky #PhotographersUnited #Stunday
A vertical landscape photograph of the Val di Funes in the Italian Dolomites, taken in late afternoon sun under a clear, deep blue sky. The top half is filled by the jagged Odle peaks, a long wall of pale limestone towers and spires lit warm pinkish tan from the left, their gullies and buttresses sharply modeled by the low light. Below them, grey-white scree fans spill onto dark green forested ridges. A hard shadow line runs diagonally across the frame from upper left to lower right: to the left, conifers and bright yellow-green meadows glow in the sun; to the right, the forested slope falls into cool, blue-green shade. Rolling pastures fill the lower half, crossed by a winding road and fences. Near the bottom center sits the small stone church of Santa Maddalena with a tall pointed bell tower, surrounded by white farmhouses with dark wooden balconies. A few parked campervans sit at the edge of the trees on the right.

The image is built on warm and cool contrast. The low, raking light gives the rock real form, and the diagonal shadow splits the frame into a lit, advancing left side and a receding, shaded right. The layers stack cleanly, from meadow to village to forest to peaks, and the church anchors the scale: a human-made structure small enough to make the mountains read at their true size. It works within a well-known alpine view, and its strength is the timing of that shadow line.

Midday in Ortisei. Sant'Antonio at the end of Via Rezia, the Dolomites stacked up behind it, and a local riding through like it's just another Friday. Every town should have a main street this good. #EastCoastKin #Photography #Leica #PhotographersofBlueSky #HumansofBlueSky #Urbangaze
A sunlit pedestrian street in Ortisei, a village in Italy's Val Gardena, in vertical format at midday. A young woman with long light-brown hair rides a dark bicycle straight toward the camera down the center of the frame, in a navy blazer with gold buttons over a white top, glancing off to her right. Her bike's shadow stretches across pale stone pavers, and a broad diagonal band of shade covers the foreground. Behind her stands a small cream-colored church with a steep dark roof, a red-trimmed quatrefoil window, and a slender bell tower topped by a red onion dome and gold cross. To the left, an orange-red hotel facade hangs with baskets of pink, magenta, and white petunias; to the right, a powder-blue building holds a cafe with white umbrellas and people at tables. Beyond the church, forested slopes rise to pale gray limestone cliffs under a clear, deep blue sky.

The picture is organized along a single vertical line: the cross, the dome, the church gable, and the rider's face stack nearly on top of one another, giving a crowded street a clear center. Depth builds in layers, from flowers and lamppost to rider, church, forest, and rock, with the distant cliffs softened toward the blue of the sky. Warm orange on one side and cool blue on the other bracket the neutral church. The rider supplies the moment and the scale. She turns a postcard view into a record of ordinary life passing through it.

#ECK #PostProcess #Subtraction Original 📷: @rjrock.bsky.social This was a fun exercise. I used some of Adobe's removal tools (which are AI based) to subtract the cables and wires. It did an ok job. I spent some time hand fixing the artifacts. Next target: the big blue screen. I got creative
There were a bunch of edits, and I did this a couple of days ago, so I won't remember them all.

First thing... I removed the wires and cables

Then I created masks for the sky, the buildings on the left, the structure on the right and the track area. I made an additional mask of just the rails. Did tonal/color adjustments for all those.

I created a layer with a copy of just the traveller (dude on platform) and pushed exposure and shadows pretty hard. Then I masked it off and slowly painted back in a little of that pushed layer to bring out the left side of the dude (lighting motivated by sunset).

Then I took a copy of the whole scene to a new layer, fit it into the screen area and used blending and masks to make it look like the screens were showing what the camera sees.

Night Falls Tervela waterfall, Santa Cristina, Val Gardena. The stream comes off Monte Pana and drops 50 meters into the Rio Gardena. At night it is floodlit, and I can see it from my hotel. #EastCoastKin #Photography #Fuji #PhotographersofBlueSky #PhotographersUnited #WaterfallWednesday

The image rests on one diagonal line and a contrast of textures: smooth, blurred water against fractured rock. Color splits the frame between warm artificial light and cool moonlight, and the water runs along the seam where they meet. With the sky excluded, only tonality signals night, so the fall reads as a pool of light in surrounding dark. It takes a familiar subject, the long-exposure waterfall, and makes it about the rock face and the light placed on it.

Fly Me to the Moon The Olympia Looping at Oktoberfest. Five loops painted like the Olympic rings, on the Wiesn since 1989. The moon sat right inside one of them while the train came around. #EastCoastKin #Photography #Leica #PhotographersofBlueSky #PhotographersUnited #urbangaze
A vertical color photograph taken at dusk looking up at a large roller coaster at Munich's Oktoberfest. Several steel loops fill the frame, their rails lined with rows of small pink and red LED lights, one loop trimmed in green. In the largest red loop on the right, a green train of riders arcs through the top and down the far side, blurred by speed. Inside that loop, just left of center, sits a small, bright half moon. Glowing yellow script signs read "Looping" and "München." Above them a lit panel of orange and yellow bulbs stands on thin posts topped by three red pennants. A blue and white checked Bavarian flag hangs at the left edge beside fragments of green neon. Along the bottom runs the edge of a festival stand, its roofline strung with warm bulbs over a painted blue and violet mural. The sky is deep blue with low gray clouds near the bottom.

#PostProcess #Subtraction Original by Rock @rjrock.bsky.social. I removed distracting objects (wires, people), cropped, intensified the sky and color to look more like a sunset. #ECK #Photography
I cropped it to make the image more horizontal to match time/track board and train. Removed wires and people. Made the sky more like a bright orange sunset which is also picked up in the time/track board and window reflections on the buildings.

Image shows an outdoor train platform at sunset, so it is on the dark side, and the sky is a bright orange. To the left are industrial buildings with windows which are reflecting the bright orange sky. The center of the image shows the train and multiple tracks. To the right is the platform and time/gate info.

This week's challenge takes you to a busy frame in Munich where you need to take something away to make the frame meaningful. Color, detail, light, a subject, a corner. Your call. Tell us what you removed and what you almost kept. #EastCoastKin #PostProcess
All I did to make it "make sense" was remove the approaching train off the track and cancel or erase the first two arrival times.. I have no idea if this is what the challenge was.. if I did this correctly, the next train doesn't arrive for 16 minutes, so it wouldn't be anywhere in sight..I also got rid of the two people who were standing there waiting on the ramp.... since I don't speak/read this language, it's hard to say if I was anywhere near correct 🤭😬🤪

I realized I made it too difficult for myself...I just removed the trains and the arrival board, took away the soda machine and the people! It's obviously an abandoned, closed down train station. Maybe repairs will happen soon?

Evening #BlueSky 🫖 Inspired by deleting the human factor. For challenge #PostProcess #Subtraction #ECK Original photo by @rjrock.bsky.social Achieved using LightRoom & info #AltText Have a great rest of your day my freinds ☺️
Once again, an outstanding original Rock image to work with and thank you my friend for that ☺️

I took the original image into LightRoom and raised all the lighting values to see what l was working with.

I then free hand masked and deleted any humans from the image, the trains and the electronic information board.

I then dropped all the lighting values of the image below the original values, isolated the sky with another mask and boosted those colours.

After that, another separate mask to isolate the tracks to reflect the new sky colours.

The last few steps of the edit was to introduce a new depth of field perspective and l finished with a slight vignette and my usual white border frame.

What I wanted to achieve was subtract the human factor out and any obvious machinery.

Boost some colours, introduce that depth of field to hide the buildings and the built-up nature of the scene and to really concentrate and highlight those leading lines.

✨🛤️✨ #PostProcess #Subtract Original 📸 : @rjrock.bsky.social Details in ALT
I wanted to take away most the details in the tracks and leave just the light reflections because I found it to be busy. I also blurred and darkened the edges trying to bring focus to the sky and the overhead wires.
Canva - enhanced the sky and darkened the details of the wood trestles to simplify the train tracks.
Snapseed - adjusted once more to brighten the light on the tracks and bring out more detail in the clouds. Blurred the edges and the station sign. Added a vignette.

A train at sunset arriving into the station.

#ECK #PostProcess #Subtraction Original 📷: @rjrock.bsky.social For this week's challenge, I wanted to emphasize the leading lines and architecture of the structure. Alt-text for Lightroom edit details.
A train platform and approaching trains in the distance. An orange glow of the sun breaks through the clouds on the horizon.

For this challenge, I wanted to emphasize the leading lines and architecture of the structure. All edits in Lightroom. First, I boosted shadows and reduced highlights. Then I cropped, removed some of the people, and dimmed the signage. I changed color profile to "Artistic 02", made saturation boosts in the color calibration panel. Reduced clarity a bit and added slight vignette.

Couldn't sleep, so I'm sitting here at 3 this morning trying my hand for this challenge ... It's now a school bus, early morning on the road; on the way to pick up the children for school. *Details in alt @rjrock.bsky.social #PostProcess #Subtraction
First had a cup of coffee... then I enlarged the picture.
Erased the train tracks...
Erased part of the train; made it into a school bus on a cold morning, driving out of the bus depot to pick up the children for school ...
