This is why cities need trees. Hard surfaces and parked cars can reach extreme temperatures, while shaded grass and tree-covered areas stay dramatically cooler. This is the urban heat island effect in one image: hard surfaces absorb and radiate heat, while vegetation and shade reduce it.

Nice to see that one of John Coltrane’s major words is being reissued. John Coltrane - “Ascension: Edition I & II” 2xLP #vinyl I don’t have an original of Edition I but I do have a 1st pressing and later repress of Edition II. www.strandedrecords.com/collections/...

On June 28, 1965, John Coltrane assembled ten musicians at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio to perform a single, unrehearsed composition that would ultimately herald a new direction for both his own music and for jazz in general. Produced by Bob Thiele and released via Impulse! Records in February of 1966, Ascension would be Coltrane’s most uncompromising statement to date.

The album had the effect of both legitimizing and stigmatizing the so-called New Thing, with some devoted Coltrane acolytes crying heresy and just as many declaring the album a work of genius. Joining Coltrane on the date were the three members of his legendary quartet - McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones - along with trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Dewey Johnson, saxophonists Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, John Tchicai, and Marion Brown, and bassist Art Davis. While a few members of this ad-hoc ensemble had worked with Coltrane previously, several were new and upcoming “young lions” of the nascent avant garde scene, their inclusion a tacit endorsement by Coltrane of this new and divisive music.

The group recorded two takes of “Ascension,” each lasting roughly forty minutes. The version subsequently known as Edition II - confusingly, the first of the two takes recorded that day - was Coltrane’s own preferred take, though the bandleader only arrived at this conclusion after the album had already been released with the second take (Edition I). Consequently, pressings of the album released after spring of 1966 would substitute Edition II for Edition I as the master take, though the jackets and catalogue numbers would remain the same.

While both versions have been reissued in various forms over the years, they are finally presented together here on vinyl for the first time, allowing listeners to easily compare the two performances of this fiery, frenzied masterpiece.

Though the basic form of “Ascension” remains mostly consistent across both versions, beginn…
