What happens when scholarly #books become open? In the first three months after the first 100 Path to Open titles became open access, requests increased by 176%, readers reached 156 countries, and 52% of usage came from people without institutional access. Read more: bit.ly/3TdnLJL

“The Trout Gallery joins the art world in mourning the loss of visionary artist Betye Saar, who passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the age of 99. Saar’s extraordinary career spanned more than seven decades, during which she transformed personal memory, spirituality, history, and identity into powerful works that continue to inspire generations.

Today we honor her legacy through 'Mystic Sky With Self Portrait' (1992), a color silkscreen on pasted board in The Trout Gallery collection. In this self-portrait, Saar turns her gaze inward, inviting us into a deeply personal exploration of selfhood, mystery, and reflection. Like much of her work, the piece bridges the individual and the universal, using symbolism and imagination to connect personal identity with larger spiritual and cultural narratives.

As we remember Betye Saar, we celebrate an artist who continually challenged us to look more closely—at history, at society, and at ourselves. Through works such as 'Mystic Sky With Self Portrait,' her presence and vision remain with us. 🖤 Rest in power, Betye Saar.”
