The pension conversation has turned, yet again, into Netflix and avocados. A quick thing though. Netflix: £20.99pm / £251.88pa Avo: 0.69p an avo - so £251pa if you had an avo every day. So, just over £500 a year Average 10% deposit? £27,300. So just 54 years to save there FFS.

Trade bodies lobbying against regulation to green their industry is a feature not a flaw. SMMT end up representing the industry of the past at inflection points like this, but it's still not easy for govt to ignore their calls to slow down...so they should design policy that exposes the laggards...

History is written by the victors. Thatcher broke the power of trade unions by mass unemployment, industrial restructuring, frittered away N Sea Oil, laid the foundations for the current housing crisis, decimated local bus services, hollowed out local government and introduced the poll tax.
Simon Clarke

Andy Burnham seems to remember a different 1970s to the rest of us. Britain in 1979 was utterly broken - ravaged by unaccountable trade union power, economically stagnant, the sick man of Europe.
The 1980s saw a remarkable national recovery based on free enterprise, the rule of law and championing Western values. And it is this that our Prime Minister rails against...

When Musk AND Rubio said “not a single person” died as a result of shutting down USAID, I wanted to vomit An estimated 700,000 people died (500,000 were kids) within a year of USAID being “put in the wood-chipper” Studies by Brooke Nichols at BU and by CGD researchers estimated a similar number

The exact number will likely never be known But multiple studies have converged around a similar figure: around 700,000 people died as a result of Musk “putting USAID through the wood chipper” (his words), of whom 500,000 were kids Picture 500,000 tiny coffins in a row: that’s MAGA/MAHA’s impact😢

This mindset is the least we deserve from a leader. Of course it has to be turned into action. But this kind of ambition and love for the country, this kind of personal but positive vision is what takes people with you. How feeble-minded Farage and Badenoch seem. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Photo of Burnham waving to the audience in front of HOPE AGAIN backdrop Burnham was not going to die wondering. He knew he might be delivering one of the longest suicide notes in history, but he did it anyway. Because he couldn't not do it. Better to go down remaining true to his principles than being slowly airbrushed out of history like the previous six prime ministers. Failures all. Andy was prepared to burn through all his political capital right there in Liverpool, right then. Not just for his own legacy but for a country he wanted to rebuild. It was the only way he could look himself in the mirror.
Honour his parents.

Even the GB News presenter is thrown by his guest's suggestion that all asylum seekers be castrated. This is what happens when the narrative marches ever rightwards. It drifts out of everyone's control and requires individuals involved to suddenly realise 'no wait, f***, that's mad'.

I am aware of precisely one (1) case of attempted violence legally defended as performance art, and it did not go well for the perpetrator (jailed for 16 years), because the claim was obviously full of shit. If Tommo were acting, if theatricality was the goal, the knife would have been fake.
