‘Round-up’ pricing in items such as coffee suggests increases are exceeding the typical 1.5% surcharge fee * Follow our Australia politics live blog for latest updates * Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast Businesses are using the recent ban on credit card surcharges as “cover” to pass along much larger price increases to customers, experts say, as cafes and restaurants struggle to cope with climbing costs and rising interest rates. Credit card surcharges, typically worth about 1.5% of the transaction, were banned from 1 October, as part of a Reserve Bank-led reform aimed at improving transparency for customers and, ultimately, lowering bank fees. A political cartoon by Megan Herbert showing two older conservative men having coffee in a busy cafe. One of them holds a newspaper open to an article titled "Win for activists: Coal mine must account for knock-on emissions." Energy nerd Christmas was yesterday, with the release of the Australia's official energy data for 2024–25. I think the share of Australia's gas being sent offshore hit a new all-time record high for the year, which is neat unless you are running an Aussie business or home that uses energy.
Australian gas production and use in the 2024–25 financial year
As with every other year in the past decade, Australia produced far more gas than it used in 2024-25.

76.5% of all the gas produced in Australia shipped overseas via one of Australia's 10 liquefied gas terminals. Another 8.3% of all the gas produced in Australia was burned by those gas export terminals and their supporting infrastructure to produce, process and compress that gas for export.

Well under one-fifth of the gas produced in Australia went to Australian users of the fuel. Gas exporters burn more of their own product preparing gas for export than any sector of Australia's domestic economy.

Floods don’t ask for your passport. Droughts don’t care about your politics. Heatwaves don’t check your race or income. Climate change is the definition of a global crisis. It will only be solved by global leadership that puts people and planet above short-term politics. Let’s demand it.
