In medieval London, everyone from kings to peasants ate eels. But by the 19th C eels had largely become a street food. In 1851, London imported 9.8 million live eels per year (mostly from Holland). 70% went to street vendors selling hot buttered eels in poorer parts of the city. 🗃️🧪

She is very awkwardly posed; she is walking away from you, but a lot of her body posture looks like she's walking towards you, and she's looking backwards in a very uncomfortable way. It's as if her body is trying to do multiple contradictory things at once.

Her expression is quite calm, as though the presence of the eels has soothed the aches of her contorted body. All she really wants to to sell you some fish, and make it home in time to listen to her upstairs neighbors having sex. It's Thursday, so it's Duct Tape Night. It's the little joys, ya know?

The sky behind her is threatening, but the horizon itself is eerily blank. It's like she's selling eels at the edge of The Nothing in the Never Ending Story.

The caption reads: "Buy my Dish of great Eels." Presumably "great" here means large, but I think we can assume that it also means amazing. This lady wouldn't sell anything less.
