People need to understand the people leading the AI industry, transhumanist/longtermist/EA movements, and tech broadly, as died-in-the-wool pseudoscientists, denialists (climate change, the holocaust), and crank purveyors of conspiritualist woo of the highest order. The height of Rationalism.

All meal names in French (petit déjeuner, déjeuner, dîner) are a variation of different ways of writing « breaking the fast ». I choose to read that as : the French , pretty much like a Labrador, always approach each meal like there wasn’t any meal before. What a winsome impermanence.

A journalist not asking basic followup questions to a person in power, has a goal. If you assumed that goal was "informing the public," you would think they were failing at that goal instead of very successfully attaining it.

"Your brains stop developing at age 25" was a press misrepresentation of a study. They wanted to see if brains continued to develop after adolescence, so the study was capped at age 25. A later study with a wider subject pool showed that brains are ALWAYS developing our whole lives.

Description

Computational models in psychology are typically judged by a single standard: empirical fit. Unfortunately, fit is insufficient, even misleading as a sole criterion, as the same result can arise from fundamentally different situations: theoretically faithful models, mathematically flexible ones, miscalibrated operationalizations, or implementations that compute something other than intended. Distinguishing between these is vital. Our evaluative metatheoretical account recognises that models stand in three distinct relations: a) toward the theory whose causal commitments it purports to capture, b) toward the specification and implementation it purports to compute, and c) toward the phenomenon it purports to explain. Each relation can succeed or fail independently, governed by criteria local to that stage. Importantly, relations are ordered such that theoretical content is transmitted or lost, and losses at earlier transitions are irrecoverable downstream. What a model's empirical success implicates about its theoretical commitments, therefore, depends on whether transitions are secured. Some success or failure profiles support explanatory claims; others only prediction; others establish theoretical coherence without empirical contact. Our account diagnoses what a given model shows, replacing the implicit assumption that empirical success transfers automatically to theoretical understanding with an explicit conditional rendition of what models can and cannot establish.
a figure that looks like a cloud that stays "cognitive capacity" with an arrow pointing to a lozenge with "theory" which points to a lozenge with "specification" which points to the same with "data" which is pointed to by a cloud that says "phenomenon"

Since we're doing this again, apparently
Deutsche Mathematik

The journal Deutsche Mathematik, published between 1936 and 1943, was edited by Theodor Vahlen and Ludwig Bieberbach. Vahlen had taught in Greifswald before serving in the army in World War I; he was wounded and became a decorated, high-ranking officer. He joined the Nazi Party after the failed Beer Hall Putsch of 1923, visited Hitler at Landsburg prison, and lost his job at the University of Greifswald after taking down the Weimar flag there. He went into voluntary exile in Vienna, returning to Germany only after Hitler became Chancellor in 1933. Bieberbach was a distinguished mathematician who first taught in Königsberg in 1910, moving to Basel in 1913 and then Berlin in 1921. Although he had himself espoused formalistic ideas in the early years of his career, by the 1920s he had become critical of David Hilbert's formalism. During Nazi rule, he became a strong supporter of the "Aryanization" of mathematics. Nazi ideology about mathematics had determined that "Aryan mathematics" would emphasize geometric math and probability theory. Abstract axiomatics were denounced as "Franco-Jewish". Felix Klein was posthumously declared an exemplar of Aryan mathematics. Hilbert and Richard Dedekind were also accepted even though their work did not actually fit the Aryan mold. Bieberbach condemned Cantorian set theory and measure theory as un-Germanic. Even abstract algebra was suspect.
