Book Hero remixing publishers' cover copy with AI for no apparent reason was enough of a nudge for me to never use them. This transparent support of beneficiary bashing is an even better one.
Screenshot from Book Hero. The word DESCRIPTION in caps with an AI sparkly symbol next to it. When you click on the sparkly, a green box pops up saying "Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome.

Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI. This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying
Use of artificial intelligence
By registering with ISBN Canada, you declare that your book was created by a human author. You may use AI tools only for limited support tasks, such as brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, or formatting your book. You must not use AI to generate the text, create the artwork, or translate the book. ISBN Canada does not issue ISBNs for works whose content is primarily generated by AI. LAC is currently reviewing its policy regarding the use of AI content creation and our guidance is subject to change.

Every so often I get asked about tee shirts. I've always wanted to do them, but I wanted to do them "properly", which to me means a full size range, and preferably locally made. But I just don't have the spoons to make that happen. So... if you'd like a tee shirt: www.redbubble.com/people/these...

#NewIllustrationoftheDay by Tom de Freston, illustrating his wife Kiran Millwood Hargrave's book about loss, The Raven's Gift. Starboard 8 Oct. The darkness and the jaggedness of the line and the strangeness of the shadows suggest emotions that make this not just the idyllic summer image you expect.

His wife is younger than most of my siblings! I've called him Uncle twice since. On the phone calls to tell him that his father, and then my Dad, had died. SibL did the Mum call. I couldn't do another one.

Years later, UncleR's wedding was soon after Mum and Dad's separation. Nana strongly suggested Dad wasn't invited. UncleR said no. My Dad had been part of his life since he was 3. He was UncleR's brother. At 13, UncleR told me I couldn't call him uncle anymore.

Mum was 15. Nana said she never knew which bed UncleR would be in. His sisters fought to get to him first when he cried. He was 2 when Mum got pregnant. She knew her baby's care would fall on her mum, who was exhausted with a toddler, and aged mid-30s. Mum had the option to keep her baby.

Thursday will be the 2nd anniversary of UncleJ's death. Mum died in August last year. And now, their baby brother on 5 October. His death would have shattered Mum. It has shattered AuntieS. She keeps talking about the day they all went to pick him & Nana up from the home. She was 8.

Same! He was honestly the loveliest man. How he coped with my first parents teacher interview, I don't know! I was there. And my Dad. And a sister & her fiance. And another sister. And her pregnant teen friend! Because they'd seen my class photo, and he was cute 😃. That school year was magic.

On the morning of her funeral, SibB and I visited her place to pick flowers for a posy to go with her. There were 3 violets under the lemon tree. It wasn't violet season.

There's a certain time of year when our self-seeded pansies release their perfume at dusk, and just keep upping the ante at night. Tonight, the smell greets you at the back door. It reminds me of Nana C. Violets were her favourite, with pansies as a replacement.

My primer 1 teacher! He was amazing! He played the zither for us.
Roderick Andrew McLeay has lived in Avondale, on the same street, for 75 years and is a regular at Avondale Library. Earlier in the year Rod was awarded a Queens Service Medal for his service to music and education. Rod conducted both the Auckland Youth Symphonic Band, as well as the Auckland Primary Principal Association - Town Hall Music Festival, for over 40 years. Taught by Mr Pope at Avondale Primary School, Rod first caught the music bug when he learnt to play the recorder. Since then, Rod has passed on the music bug by teaching school children how to play musical instruments. We would just like to congratulate Mr McLeay on his achievement and give thanks for his service, not only to music and education, but to our little community also. #AppreciationPost #LocalHeroes

Years ago, we had a group of young prospects hanging out at work. They were on the edge of being an issue... until I phone my big bro. Me: and they're wearing blue. Bro: alright, they're mine. I'll come. And he just sat there, reading the paper, and chatting to staff. No gang issues afterwards.
