This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

Sick. My @smh @theage cartoon.
Four frames. 1. Terns on a beach. One says to another, “I feel sick.” 2. A fur seal on a beach beside lots of dead birds thinks, “I feel sick.” 3. A woman reads a series of news headline placards with “BIRD FLU JUMPS SPECIES”, “MORE HEAT WAVES, FIRES”, “NO END OF WARS”; she thinks, “I feel sick”. 4. The world, with fires and explosions everywhere, thinks, “I feel sick.”

If we measure success only in km² protected, we risk celebrating paper parks. The real challenge is ensuring protected and conserved areas have the governance, financing and capacity to deliver lasting conservation outcomes. That's the spirit of #30x30. theconversation.com/the-world-ag...

The world agreed to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030 – but marine protection can’t be judged by area alone
So far, about 10% of the ocean has formal protection as countries work toward the 30x30 goal, but many areas are still protected on paper only.

This might be one of the funniest chart about energy scenarios I’ve seen. You can hardly see “actual” for gas
Winners and Losers
The IEA overestimated gas growth in Asia and underestimated solar

Gas
• Forecast 547 TWh
• Actual 17 TWh

Solar
• Forecast 465 TWh
• Actual 1,333 TWh

Note: Shows expected growth in Asian power generation between 2018 and 2025, based on actual 2018 generation, actual 2025 generation, and the 2018 World Energy Outlook's Current Policies Scenario estimates for 2025. Actual 2025 generation figures are from Ember.

BREAKING: Minister for Environment finally secures budget funding for Environment portfolio Unfortunately for the environment it's $500M for "unlocking major projects and helping proponents get a faster yes or a faster no" Recall, NONE of the 6 National Environmental Standards have been finalised
Screenshot of LinkedIn post from Australian Federal Minister for the Environment, Murray Watt

"BREAKING:
For too long Australia's environmental laws were holding up housing and energy projects while not protecting our environment.

We fixed that last year, passing historic reforms to those laws.

Now, our Budget includes a $500 million plan to put those laws to work, unlocking major projects and helping proponents get a faster yes or a faster no.

That's a win-win for our economy and our precious natural environment."
