At which point in the article do they note that 5-year survival is influenced by lead time and overdiagnosis biases? And so some proportions of a given cancer's "success" by this measure is meaningless or harmful? (Nowhere, of course!)

Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

Not surprising at all. I regularly see authors who rarely published before 2026, and who have published monthly this year. This volume (~8, not 200) might fly below the radar for many editors.

Great...now I can spend almost four full work days being helped by COPE to be a journal editor in the era of AI. Publishers (and COPE) know we have day jobs, right? Publishers have not adjusted our honoraria since this deluge started.

A bioethics journal could easily publish a whole issue right now where every paper has the same outline and structure of argument, and every author says they used AI only for "help" with "language". Mucking with language (aka thinking) *is* the method of bioethics. Also I suspect they lack insight.

You could probably do a study and show that a particular sentence never appeared in the ethics literature until the release of some specific AI version, and then it appeared 5000 times in the next six months.

The phenomenology of reading AI vs humans. I'm realizing that when I read, my mind, as it were, reaches out to the human being who wrote. When I reach out and find a computer, it feels extremely disorienting.

There is such a phenomenology for me of reading AI. Maybe it reflects the AI stress of journal editing. But maybe it's something else. I feel visceral relief when it feels like a human is talking to me via their writing. ...But then they produce one AI-ish sentence and my head spins.

We philosophers must raise standards on use of empirical research. Philosophers say a colleague's work is well-researched when there is a footnote for every sentence, with zero assessment of accuracy. It is a problem that people like Cofnas and de Vries get published in (applied!) philosophy.

Interesting interview with @gofundme.com CEO Tim Cadogan and @reckless.bsky.social. Cadogan says an advantage of private donations over the public safety net is that donations come "with love". This ignores consistent findings that this 'love' is distributed very, very inequitably.
"No system is perfect, and we can supplement that. It gives people a way to come together that is different from an institution supporting you. An institution can do a lot. The NHS can do a lot. Medicare in Australia can do a lot, but it’s not coming with love, right?"

This isn't the first time the USA has placed 50% tariffs on Canada. In 1890, the USA's Tariff Act was touted as a way to build up American industry, but the true goal was forcing the annexation of Canada. It backfired and made Canada stronger. This is the story. 📸 LoC 🧵1/10

Note that de Vries has three masters degrees, two of which are in philosophy, but his PhD is not philosophy. His work reads like someone who googles for empirical support rather than doing substantive normative work. (Not that a philosophy phd insulates you from this kind of thing.)
