A circular manhole cover (although I suspect there is no hole under it) set in a piece of pavement. It has a star pattern, and poking through the holes are little bits of greenery, taking any opportunity they can.

This katydid from Ecuador has been affectionately named by photographers "candy-cane katydid". The truth is... we are not sure which species it is. One possibility is a Harroweria nymph, but until someone witnesses the transformation into the adult stage it will remain a mystery.

SOOTHING BIRD FACT Megapodes, bizarre turkey-like birds found in Australia, Indonesia, New Guinea, and on other islands in that region, bury their eggs in mounds and then abandon them, turtle-style. The chicks hatch, dig themselves out, and are immediately self-sufficient. 🪶

While I work on this year's valentine, here's last year's.
A four-panel comic. In panel 1, a wood frog stands on a pink background. The text says: "Feeling unlucky in love? Did you know that male Wood Frogs have difficulty perceiving members of their species? Here are some things they’ve been documented trying to mate with." "Spotted Salamander." The wood frog looks at a large yellow-spotted salamander, with a heart over the frog's head. "Cattail." The frog looks amorously at a large cattail flower or "sausage." "Green frog." The wood frog looks at a large confused-looking green frog. "Dead fish." The wood frog stares at a large dead fish. "Live fish." The wood frog looks amorously at a large trout. "Pine cone." The wood frog looks at a large pine cone. The final text says: "Sorry, there's no moral here. I just thought you'd enjoy this fact about frogs."

Things are weird and bad so here, stop and take a bird break. Here's a bird. Look at it. REGARD THE BIRD. (photo by me)
A tufted titmouse, up close, perched on a needled evergreen branch in a delicate, light snow. The tuft is up, a little. The gray-and-white bird has a warming sunset hint under its wings. Its beak is black and short, like a black sunflower seed. The bird looks impudent. Annoyed by your presence. That's all right. Humans have not done much to earn the favor of birds these days though to be fair, the bird is there because there is a bird feeder nearby, so a little gratitude would be nice, bird. It's fine. It's fine! Maybe the bird isn't annoyed. But the bird is definitely annoyed. Photo by me, Chuck Wendig

When Monday sneaks up with no warning...again. #MondayMotivation
A small, fluffed-up Wren perches on a branch, its feathers sticking out in all directions as if caught off guard. Its tiny beak is slightly open, and its wide, alert eyes give the impression of someone who’s just realised it’s Monday with no warning. The warm golden light catches the ruffled edges of its feathers, adding to the look of mild surprise and unpreparedness. The blurred background of green foliage contrasts with the Wren’s frazzled appearance, making it the perfect embodiment of that Monday mood.

The general sense of everything going to hell in a hand-basket isn’t the best thing to layer on top of my usual January blues but this weekend I got to watch a beautiful Barn Owl emerge from its nest box and start hunting at dusk, floating silently over the fields like a ghost. #birds
A Barn Owl stands perched on the corner of a wooden nest box platform in grey winter twilight light, with the slanting roof of the nest box to its right. The owl is seen in three-quarter profile looking out towards left of shot. There are bare grey tree trunks and branches in the background. It is a beautiful owl with a snowy-white heart-shaped facial disc, large black eyes, white breast and underparts and pale sandy-brown head, wings and tail, speckled and dusted with pale grey.
