a purported Chilean Skua (is in, usually found in southern South America) was seen in the southern Gulf of Maine this week. Tomorrow I’ll be on the big Maine Audubon pelagic out of Bar Harbor. I’ll keep you posted. 👀

You are welcome—I thoroughly enjoyed the book! I love books like WORLD WITHOUT BIRDS that provide messages of hope. It is pretty amazing what we’ve been able to do to bring some species back from the brink, and it makes the weight of this era more manageable.

Birds have been feeding at sunrise near a walking bridge that sits several above the water at a local Reserve. I've gotten incredible #birds eating fish content, but there's one shot that's eluded me: THE CHASE. This morning, I got it! Over 13 seconds, I got 228 shots. These 4 tell the story:

the anchovy above the water trying to escape the grebe

The anchovy has started to jump out of the water and looks back towards the grebe

the grebe comes up for a breath of air and the fish jumps behind it, i didnt get any more usable shots after this because the grebe dove and grabbed it, so i switched to video

For the past couple of years a pair of Red-necked Grebes have attempted to breed in Biddeford Pool, on the coast of Maine, far south of their typical breeding range. Failed every year, not even close, but we appreciate the attempt. Here’s a terrible video of them.
