Trump called for Iran to bomb Los Angeles & San Diego. A congressional candidate was raped while fixing her campaign signs. The right constantly calls for violence against the left but the mainstream media will call it out. They cared more about Hillary’s emails and Hunter’s laptop.

But we're in a time in the world when no one really wants to do anything so boring as "pay to support the institutions that do the hard dull work of developing knowledge." And when I say "no one" I don't just mean the fascists. Slopulism is everywhere and everyone wants the fast easy answer.

Geese are containers of all the spite, meanness, and hate taken from Canadians, transferred to them in the annual Emotional Conflux, a week after Moose-hatching season ends. The energy radiates from the CN Tower, across the ionosphere, and into geese around the globe.

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

One of the most harrowing things about academia, when you're a grad student, is how vulnerable you are to how you're perceived by more senior researchers. Your career advancement depends on confidential letters of reference & private discussions amongst faculty. You have no information or control.

If you want to really know how the outrage machine gets fired up: 1. Schmitt plans to drop “bombshell” on Smith 2. Someone plants story that Schmitt is a Vance VP contender to run same day 3. Right-wing Twittersphere gets talking points 4. Schmitt steps in it 5. Scheduled tweets go out anyway

Yes. Boston is just generally more straight-laced and conservative. It's still New England after all. SF is wild. I went to Berkeley for grad school, so I experienced both environments. SF always had that edgy, sex cult vibe.

Totally THIS. MIT class of '98. All I can think of is SIPB/East campus/Senior house weirdness (for the uninitiated, SIPB = student information processing board and East campus and senior house are dorms). And the Berkeley connection is the cherry on top of the gross sundae.

This program was flawed from the start, in large part due to it coming at the same time university budgets are being destroyed by the provinces. We'd have no problem attracting int'l talent - and building domestic talent - if we maintained adequate institutional funding.

International student visa applications and approvals, Canada 2022-2025. We're down 90% on where we were three years ago. Given that intl student fees brought in about $14B at their peak, we're looking at the potential loss by 2028 of $12B of PSE income (or about 16% of the total).

I have no doubt that some researches will find, and have already found, beneficial uses for AI. But this does not require a university-wide restructure nor a university-wide demand that each faculty member individually reinvent their courses to “train students for Ai” (whatever the heck that means)
