So stoked to finally share our Opinion paper on "Emergent pattern formation in trophic metacommunities" 🦊 #openaccess in Trends Open! doi.org/10.1016/j.tr... If you're into in spatial ecology or generally intrigued by the complex dynamics of ecological systems, this might be just for you 🌱
Figure 1 of Philipp et al. Trends Open 2026. "Emergent pattern formation in trophic metacommunities".
Image shows a scheme drawing illustrating an emergent spatial pattern (left) and a spatialtemporal pattern (right) forming through scale-dependent feedback in a minimal example - a three-species food chain connected by species-specific, unequal mobility among two habitat patches. The pattern is characterised by accumulation of the immobile species on one habitat, while the other is almost empty. In the left example, this pattern is static over time, while in the right one, accumulation is locally grazed down, temporarily reversing the role of the 'good' and 'bad' patch.

Last year, I publicly complained multiple times (see e.g. elevanth.org/blog/2025/07...) that the open access movement had been captured by publishers, and we are now worse off than before open access. Well people got mad at me for saying it. But I think things are still getting worse.

(omark, 29.6.2026)
