Procession of ‘Aoi matsuri’ festival in Kyoto, Japan
Leaning against the towering, black-lacquered wheel of an imperial carriage (goshoguruma), an attendant clad in pristine white Heian-period robes steps rhythmically along the gravel avenue. His black headpiece, decorated with fresh sprigs of wild ginger (aoi), tilts forward in concentrated focus as his hands steady the massive wheel, whose gilded bronze fittings gleam against the deep wood. Above, a lush fringe of cascading purple and white wisteria (fuji) blossoms and bright yellow accents drapes gracefully over a fine bamboo screen (sudare). The photograph captures a dignified, timeless sensory atmosphere: the rhythmic crunch of stone beneath heavy wheels, the faint creak of lacquered timber under tension, the subtle fragrance of spring greenery, and the solemn, reverent hush of a centuries-old imperial procession moving through Kyoto. Celebrated as the Aoi Matsuri (officially the Kamo Matsuri), this grand pageant is one of Kyoto’s three major annual festivals, tracing its origins back over 1,400 years to the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Kinmei. Recreating the aristocratic splendor of the Heian period (794–1185), the 500-person procession (Roto no Gi) travels from the Kyoto Imperial Palace (Gosho) to the sacred Shimogamo and Kamigamo Shrines. The ox cart (goshoguruma), traditionally carrying the imperial princess (Saiō-dai) or high nobility, serves as a ultimate symbol of miyabi—the Heian courtly ideal of aristocratic refinement and aesthetic grace. Named after the aoi (wild ginger) and katsura foliage adorning the participants, carts, and shrines to invite divine favor, the festival represents a living preservation of traditional Japanese monozukuri (artisanal mastery), bringing together master craftsmanship in urushi lacquer, gold gilding, and ceremonial textiles.
