As I said in my write up on LOST HIGHWAY, Lynch seemed to understand on a molecular level that love and fear is all there is.

One of my favourite small David Lynch moments is when he tried to do one of those ceramic art cows for New York City and submitted this and was rejected.
A grotesque headless cow that says "eat my fear"NEW YORK (AP) - It seems David Lynch is too gruesome
even for New York.

The cow sculpture created by the director for a public
art show is being returned to California without going
on display, The New York Times reported Thursday.

Lynch, known for the eerie 1990s television drama
``Twin Peaks,'' chopped off his cow's head and stuck
forks and knives into its back. He also covered parts
of the cow with a reddish, blood-like substance.

``I thought it was Charles Manson,'' city Parks
Commissioner Henry J. Stern told the Times. ``I don't
know whether it's shock art or schlock art. David
Lynch should stick to his day job, making movies.''

CowParade NYC 2000 features several hundred fiberglass
cows decorated by artists and schoolchildren and
displayed on sidewalks around the city.

Lynch said he was disappointed to be excluded. ``Don't
you think when people tell you you're allowed to do
whatever you want as long as it's not sexually X-rated
that they should stand behind their word and show your
cow?'' Lynch said.

A cow by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals,
was rejected before the cow parade began in June and
sued the city and organizers unsuccessfully.

on the one hand I guess it's good that there is an answer to the question "what kind of villainy would the far right have to champion to get even a semblance of resistance from the center right" but on the other hand I would have hoped for a higher bar than "literally giving children polio"

Ultimately at some point you have to decide who want to allow to define your culture. This one guy is expending all your trust and safety resources. Will that work get more difficult if you ban him? Yes, for a while. But if you let him push the boundaries it gets worse, bit by bit, *forever.*

I would suggest an amendment: less safe for the people they want to target* Bluesky will enforce their rules and overenforce their rules when it will protect the interests they represent. It's the marginalised folk who will find themselves bound and not protected

In addition to ruthlessly stripping the power of newly elected Democrats, NC’s GOP legislature constrained the ability of cities to rezone. Law largely disallows cities from changing the permitted uses of land—making it much more difficult, eg, for cities to ban auto-oriented uses in transit areas.

Spotify Wrapped is fun but a reminder that we no longer pay for ownership, we pay for access - it’s all a big scam! $12/month to listen to the same albums over and over when you can pay an indie music store ONCE or buy direct from the artist, an investment that also compensates them for their work.

Figures from the United Musicians & Allied Workers union. 80% of music on Spotify makes no money at all and if you listened to a song 500 times the artist/label would receive a whopping $1.50.

The sinister effectiveness of the “Think about detransitioners*” argument is that it implicitly gives cis people gender dysphoria-like feelings, which make them uncomfortable, which they then use to punish people who experience those feelings with far more frequency.

One of the most vital conversations we need to have in re: human rights in the US involves the rights we afford children who are, legally speaking, their parents’ property in a distressing number of instances. That needs to change.

this talking point was annoying 5 years ago but is straight-up infuriating in 2024. COVID saw the largest outflux of economic activity from cities in decades, and CHIPS/IRA spent billions to move jobs out of the coasts. When is it OK to say the problem is a lack of homebuilding?
