I was so excited to see @caitlinstarling.com 's new book, Milkteeth, pop up on the October ALA ALCs, and was even happier when I realized it contains the dream I have had ever since deciding to enter medical school - that a vampire would come to me asking for help understanding their own physiology.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

you may think i am joking but i am not. they’re talking about AI the way protestant zealots talked about the end times. in both cases we are hearing people talk about themselves — their desires, their lust for destruction, their yearning to trample their rivals underfoot.

I miss TV shows with 20+ episodes. I miss filler episodes. I miss side stories that mean nothing, and other ones that turn out to be the most brilliant storytelling you've ever seen. Perhaps I am old, but so much made now just tires me.

Just finished The Halls of the Dead by @smhallow.bsky.social and loved it! Great queer romance plus all the other things that are good - necromancy, revenge, and gore. The audiobook narrators were delightful.

Absolutely loved The Republic of Memory by @mahmudelsayed.bsky.social . Compelling characters in a sci-fi setting, gripping plot, and a whole lot to ponder about language, culture, and revolution. I read the audio version, and the narrators didn't disappoint. Can't wait for the sequel! #booksky

You know what? People who don’t like kissing don’t have to watch romances. Sober realists aren’t forced to sit through SFF. Grouches can eschew comedy and squeamish people are welcome not to watch horror films. Just let things exist for their target audience.

A digital illustration in the style of the famous Salvador Dalí painting The Persistence of Memory. Instead of melting clocks I drew stupid memes. Its an abstract absurdist piece. There are yellow cliffs in the back, edging into water. The sky is blue and yellow. The ground is brown and barren. Melting on the ground is the yellow "everything is fine" dog. Troll face ia melting over a tree branch, the tree growing from some sort of weird orange rectangle. On the rectangle is also a melty grumpy cat and a doge.
