Desperate to visit the new Byron museum in Ravenna, I read that: "one of the rooms contains tokens of love kept by the countess, including letters, jewellery, locks of the poet's curly hair and shards of his sunburned skin." Shards of what now? Shards of his burned skin? kept as tokens of ... love?!

🔔 Please share widely! A call for contributions for an edited collection _Reading the Queer Eighteenth Century_ which will be published by De Gruyter in early 2026. Submit a proposal or pass on to interested scholars! #Skystorians #18C #Queer #Disability #Ecocriticism #trans #transnational
Call for proposals:
Reading the Queer Eighteenth Century: Historiography, Epistemology, and Embodiment
Edited by Declan Kavanagh, University of Kent, U.K.
Reading the Queer Eighteenth Century presents essays, which explore queerness broadly conceived in the
anglophone long eighteenth century.
Contributors offer the latest overview of key debates in queer eighteenth-century studies by zoning in on
current trends in queer historiography, multi-scalar queer epistemologies, intersections between queerness
and class, race, indigeneity, as well as engaging in questions of queer pedagogical practice and future
directions for the field. A connective theme of the collection will be the question of ‘presentism’ in queer
engagements with the long eighteenth century period. Essays will explore trans, bi, queer, gay, lesbian and
other approaches to eighteenth-century materials whilst also showcasing the period’s ramifications for
present day debates in LGBTQIA+ studies.

Let's Read ECF this Monday morning: "Satire and Embodiment: Allegorical Romance on Stage and Page in Mid-Eighteenth-Century Britain," by Ros Ballaster muse.jhu.edu/article/584628 #18thCentury #C18th #18thC Thank you for reading the journal at Project MUSE.
Abstract: Theatrical presentation of character relies on embodiment and mimesis where the novel constructs plausible character through the diegetic presentation of consciousness and action. This article argues that, with the introduction of stage censorship in the 1730s, allegorical prose romance mediates the transition from theatrical to novelistic modes of rendering plausible embodied character. Theatre and the novel in the mid-eighteenth century share a preoccupation with the relation of embodiment to allegorical abstraction, often represented in the figure of the Quixote, who mistakes one for the other. This essay charts the translation of techniques found in Henry Fielding’s satirical allegory in his short stage plays of the 1730s with three allegorical romances of 1736 that take Frederick, Prince of Wales, and his new bride, Princess Augusta of Saxa-Gothe-Altenburg, as the hero and heroine ...
