I don’t really understand the reluctance to use the frozen Russian assets. By its actions Russia has forfeited them many times over. And it’s not as if we aren’t already subject to their hybrid warfare attacks.

Absolutely spot on. Let’s instead pause on these words by @iandunt.bsky.social in respect of London in the context of today’s byelection. “They hate it because it is beautiful, & it works, & that success provides a comprehensive refutation of their worldview.”

It's become a catchphrase for Badenoch that "We have to be SERIOUS" - and she's right about that. Yet every announcement is like this: a burst whoopie-cushion of wrong numbers, bungled data and stuff someone found on Google. The gulf between rhetoric and reality is positively cavernous.

They shout about Burnham and labour returning us to the 70s but really it’s their Thatcherite obsession which would see us back 40 years, and yet without any European pragmatism.

Until political leaders make the argument unapologetically, many will think rejoin is impossible. The world has changed since 2016 - our isolation from our own continent feels even more deranged now. The rejoin arguments make themselves, but the bridge to get there must be made by political leaders.

I have just finished the things we never say by Elizabeth Strout. And ooof it’s a good read. Unforgettable. Her best I think. Can’t get it out of my mind and hard to start something else so soon afterwards.

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

An excellent speech - authentic and brave. A longed for moment of hope, where someone on the progressive left dares frame an argument, knowing full well that the “same news outlets that greeted Liz Truss’ disastrous budget as a political triumph, will treat [his] speech as a national calamity.”

The rush to speculate that asylum seekers are responsible for every crime in the news is a sort of opportunistic informational terrorism. Until it’s disproved it stokes fear and hatred. When it is disproved there are no adverse consequences and they know that they only have to be lucky once.

As for the Board of Peace, it’s based on financial contributions and subject to the whims of a capricious, vindictive president who cares not for peace, justice nor democracy. And as the article makes clear, Blair’s history makes him no neutral actor in the Middle East.

Thinktanks like the Tony blair institute should always be open about their financial backers, so ppl are clear who pays for them & whose interests they serve. Democracies are being undermined where a vote counts far less than the influence of rich companies who determine policy, hidden from view.
