Located at Nanzo-in Temple in Sasaguri, Fukuoka Prefecture, this grand bronze monument—stretching 41 meters in length, 11 meters in height, and weighing approximately 300 tons—is celebrated as one of the largest bronze statues in the world. Erected in 1995, the Nehanzō was constructed to house sacred Buddhist relics gifted from Myanmar as an expression of gratitude for decades of medical supplies and humanitarian aid provided by the temple. Nanzo-in also serves as the chief location on the historic Sasaguri 88 Temple Pilgrimage route, welcoming pilgrims into the forested hills of Kyushu. The extraordinary bronze casting and structural engineering required to realize the massive monument embody the zenith of Japanese monozukuri (artisanal mastery and technological precision), integrating monumental art harmoniously within the surrounding topography.

@debbietknits.bsky.social I finally did the knitted string lights... next time would work larger gauge (too dense!) and single color lights on plastic coated wire. This has all colors + 15 light patterns. 5 wee wires between and kinks and contacts glitched a bunch of sequences. #knitting #DIY

Coiled within the narrow vertical confines of a hanging scroll (kakejiku), a wildly expressive tiger (tora) surges forward with theatrical intensity. The composition is boldly cropped: at the top, a striped, bushy tail curves into the frame from above, while below, the beast's head and massive, clawed paw press dramatically against the right margin. Shōhaku renders the creature with bulging, saucer-like eyes, flared whiskers, and an almost comical grinning jaw, using dense, jet-black ink strokes contrasted against soft grey washes. Through a masterly combination of wet ink shading and dry-brush technique (kashitsu), the artist captures both the tactile softness of fur and the uncanny, pulsating vitality of a mythical predator.
Painted in the 18th century by Soga Shōhaku (1730–1781), this ink painting (suibokuga) exemplifies the radical spirit of one of Edo-period Japan's celebrated "eccentric" painters (ki-jin). Rejecting the polished, orthodox styles of the state-sanctioned Kanō and Tosa academies, Shōhaku sought inspiration in the uninhibited, expressive brushwork of medieval Muromachi-period masters. Because tigers were not native to Japan, Edo artists had no opportunity to observe them live, relying instead on imported pelts, domestic cats, and traditional Chinese or Korean paintings. Shōhaku transformed this lack of direct observation into a triumph of imaginative monozukuri (artisanal mastery), channeling classical dragon-and-tiger motifs into a fiercely idiosyncratic, humorously exaggerated portrait that challenged the artistic norms of his day.

#Spiralizer cabbage magic 🪄 This was a gift I thought I'd rarely use and that would have time consuming cleanup, but I actually use quite a lot. And holy cow is it fast for shredding cabbage for stir fry, mu shu, coleslaw... I used to do that shit by hand. #cooking #gadgets

For #WorldPhotographyDay here's one of my favourite images from #Iceland of the stunning Sólfar (Sun Voyager) sculpture in Reykjavík (by Jon Gunnar Arnason). Taken back in March 2013.

Pre-sunrise winter photo with lots of lovely pale blue and pink. Long exposure so smooth clouds over distant mountains. Main subject is a wonderful metal sculpture in the shape of a Viking boat, with the light making it look rose gold. Partly reflected in the frozen paving below.
