Ten years ago on Reddit, LeVar Burton told a story about how as a teenager he learned that it's wrong to hurt an insect. It stuck with me and I remembered it today after seeing whom he is willing to fight. I'm not on Reddit anymore, but I found it and made a screenshot.

Wow. I will miss Dr. Angelou. At the moment that we were hitting "go" on the campaign yesterday, we were hearing the news of Dr. Maya Angelou passing. And she played my grandmother in the ROOTS miniseries. In fact, on my first day of filming, in the first scene, she was there. And the scene was in Kunta Kinte's hut, some giant bug came crawling into the hut, and it was Dr. Maya, Cicely Tyson, me and a young girl as well. I was a 19 year old kid, and didn't know a whole lot. I thought it was my responsibility to kill this bug to protect the women in that moment. And Maya lit into me something fierce. And I have NEVER forgotten that look. And she said "just because you are larger than a thing gives you no right to think you have control over its life or death. Because you are larger and more powerful means you have a responsibility to protect all life." And that was certainly a lesson that I needed to hear on that day.

"How grains of rocket propellant are made," a diagram showing workers in every step of the way along with industrial processes.

cotton is shredded...bathed in acid, wrung out, and purified. Watery "slurry" of nitrocotton (fat is combined with nitric acid to make nitroglycerin, which is combined with other chemicals). Nitrocellulose and nitrogylcerin mixed into paste. Paste is sacked and dried 3 or 4 days by warm air, paste is rolled into sheets, slitting, cutting, strips rolled, grain is extruded by hydraulic press, cross-shapped grains are cut to approximate length, x-ray inspection for air holes, grains are cut and milled to exact size, one grain in ten is test fired, other grains are wrapped in cellophane, sacked, and packed in metal cartons, finally grains are shipped to the battlefront.

I feel like the definition of being at “high risk” from covid really needs to include “high probability of messing up your health and life for months or years” not just “likely to immediately kill you.” A 9% chance that I’m gonna be sick for at least three months is a pretty high risk!

I was at a meeting of long-COVID researchers last week and one bit of data that came out of human cohort studies is that the (in)ability to rest in the first 2 weeks of infection correlates with risk for long-term symptoms. Resting is THE thing.

I teach this paper in the Experimental Design grad class in our redesigned grad curriculum. I think it does a great job of teaching students how to articulate and test hypotheses with experiments in an abstract way so that the idea of "experiments" is not necessarily attached to any expectations
