something very funny about the Bayeux Tapestry getting 5 stars after 940 years, as if Bishop Odo of Bayeux has been sat at home all this time waiting for the review, absolutely raging - "I gave that Guardian journalist a press comp on OPENING NIGHT for god's sake"

Still thinking about being at the roadside watching this guy, doing 4.5 minutes per mile over 13 miles, so far ahead that he could have stopped for a piss and still won.

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

RIP Jeffrey Archer, not a day goes by when I don't think about the judge in his 1987 libel case (which Archer "won" by doing a bunch of perjury) summing up for the jury by going "would a guilty man have such a hot wife". one of the most insane legal moments of all time

Made for Francisco Morozini of Venezia (1619-1694). One could pull the silk bookmark and fire the weapon while the book was closed. This artifact is housed at the Museo Correr in Venezia, Italia.

J.G. Ballard, lost in the supermarket
"It was ironic that the author of such unsettling work was a quiet and serious family man, who lived most of his adult life in a modest suburban house in Shepperton. His editor Malcom Edwards recalled how Ballard, on receiving the first payment for the film rights for Empire of the Sun, decided to splash out by visiting his local supermarket. After wandering the aisles for some time, he returned home with a tin of salmon." (Adam Sisman in the Guardian, 25.04.26)

Just watched Kenya's Gideon Kiprotich run past me on the way to demolishing the Cardiff Half Marathon field in 59:34. At around the 10 mile point he had an unassailable 25-30 sec lead. It's a beautiful day. No picture.

I was listening to Birthday by the Sugarcubes, a song that transcends its era, and thinking about how Björk says that when she was young she would take a little tent, hike out into the forest alone and just... sing. To herself, to no-one. Truly one of the most romantic and lovely things.

Fell into a tangle of hawthorn and brambles as teenager because I wasn't looking where I was going. Took an age to get out. Long enough for someone to see my struggle and mistake me for a paralytic drunk and, for some reason, beat me with their brolly.

Living in a world of constant scams, where every interaction is a possible threat, is truly poisoning the well of normal interactions between people. We are on guard, suspicious. Retreating towards what (and who) we already know and consider 'ours'.

Baffled by the opening track of this album by Swedish indie-pop veterans Club 8, which very clearly, er, 'references' Saint Etienne's Nothing Can Stop Us Now. Yes, that song itself is built around a Dusty Springfield sample so it's theft-on-theft, but it's such an odd thing to do. Listen here:

It is National Poetry Day in the UK, so for my contribution, I humbly share one of my favourite poems of all time, written by Robert Florence,
BATMAN'S AFF HIS NUT
Batman's aff his nut
Have you seen the way he cuts aboot
Dressed up as a mad fuckin bat
Batterin guys
I was lit at:
"Mate, I'm worried aboot ye
I know your ma and da died
But everybody's ma and da dies
And we're no aw runnin aboot
Hookin muggers and
Kickin psychopaths in the baws."
And that was when Batman went
"Aye, but do ye ever feel like it?
Do you ever look at the world and feel like it?
Like having a big mad base under your hoose?
Do you ever feel like drivin a big mad motor
that turns intae a tank?
And leatherin fuck oot of guys aw night?
Scarin the fuckin shite oot of them?"
And that was when I was lit at:
"Aye. Fuck it. Ah dae."
And that's the Secret Origin of Robin
and everybody else.

Lads, how do you sell a car these days? Trying my luck with the old faves of Gumtree and FB Marketplace but absolutely no-one is biting. My Peugeot 308 remains unsold. It's a bit too old for some of the sites like Motorway, which seem more for slightly newer cars. And I'm not doing 'We Buy...'.

Those crazy ol' Manics are out playing shows where they run shiny radio hit Your Love Alone is Not Enough into 1994's Die In The Summertime, a song which literally ends with the words "I WANNA DIE". Contrary, inexplicable, marvellous bastards til the end. Setlist pic nicked from Insta.

The world‘s most normal bed user
Photo of a fuzzy green domed cat bed with an opening on the front from which the right haunch of my cat Birdie is sticking out in comical fashion. It looks like a half chicken that would be served to you on a plate. her fur is orange brown and white with a white sock on her right paw. This bed is sitting on top of a wood floor and next to a black couch and a little gray ottoman.

At the end of April 1888, Monet returned to Givervy from the South of France. Moulin de Limetz is one of two paintings in which he pictured the mill at Limetz-Villez, a village just over a mile south of Giverny, with a branch of the Epte, flowing gently past.
