FFS, we weren't able to build a railway track from London to Manchester. We will not be building Kemi's Death Ray!

Enjoying the new Johnny Marr single. You can tell he's been hanging around with Chrissie and guesting with The Pretenders - some chiming Honeyman-Scott esque guitar - who I know was an influence, and some 'Back On The Chain Gang' bits and bobs in the hooks. Good lad.

Being subject, daily, to this level of shallow political acumen & thought is draining to the soul, genuinely. We deserve so much better.

Kemi Badenoch’s whole shtick is slash and burn, which is red meat for the Westminster-brained, but for the wider electorate… what actually is her vision for what emerges from the ashes? What sort of country does she want us to become? Seemingly just one that’s punitive, uncaring and nasty?

What you listen to whilst dog walking, cooking, reading the Sunday papers truly matters. And the right podcast hits the mark perfectly. My recent favourite was 'The Reunion: 'Local Hero' with Kirsty Wark and the cast of Bill Forsyth movies: joy. Soundtrack your life mindfully. Gentle pleasures.

Every now and again The Velvet Underground pop up on the radio and, again, I wonder why I don't play them all day every day - and then quickly realize that's the point - beautiful, dreamy, fleeting moments of the Velvets is really how they are best consumed.

Yeah, stick 'tech', 'fuel', 'recharge' or 'max' in there and you're basically telling the lads 'It's OK to shop', although 'sensitive' and 'balm' is certainly taking up space in Boots these days. On the subject of the picture: I actually read that as 'Asswipes' but that's just me....

As a fan of (a) James Graham and (b) Keynes, I was primed to like this but I really did. I think it succeeds by portraying Keynes as a man trying to bring together the different strands of life. You get a sense of worlds colliding and why some, from Hayek to the Bloomsbury Group, found it unnerving

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

A fantastic read outlining how Burnham's speech seized the news agenda & faced down Farage's 'death grip' on the national conversation by simply ignoring him. Also some effective key notes on the fact that 'wherever populism wins, conditions worsen'.

Celebrity Traitors is so richly entertaining, chock full of so many snippets of fun & humour, it is difficult to focus on one highlight - but James Blunt (likeable, witty btw) still being one of pop's high earners with that haircut and having turned into Seb Coe is quite fascinating to me.

I recommend people read this to get a sense of the president's grave cognitive impairment. Trump is either unwilling or unable (or maybe both) to answer the questions he's actually asked, so he just rants and raves while the interviewers do their best to provide structure to his random brain firings

This mindset is the least we deserve from a leader. Of course it has to be turned into action. But this kind of ambition and love for the country, this kind of personal but positive vision is what takes people with you. How feeble-minded Farage and Badenoch seem. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Photo of Burnham waving to the audience in front of HOPE AGAIN backdrop Burnham was not going to die wondering. He knew he might be delivering one of the longest suicide notes in history, but he did it anyway. Because he couldn't not do it. Better to go down remaining true to his principles than being slowly airbrushed out of history like the previous six prime ministers. Failures all. Andy was prepared to burn through all his political capital right there in Liverpool, right then. Not just for his own legacy but for a country he wanted to rebuild. It was the only way he could look himself in the mirror.
Honour his parents.

There's a polite notice on the bookshop door that reads 'Dry, Well Behaved Dogs Welcome'. It seems impossible for dog owners (of whom I am one) to read this notice in their heads. It's annoying in Summer to hear it 10 ten times per day, but then comforting to anticipate another four legged friend.
