At 7:28 pm GMT tonight in 1957 at the Tyuratam Test Range in Kazakhstan, the Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite—Prosteyshiy Sputnik 1 (Elementary Satellite 1)—into low-Earth orbit, shocking the United States, igniting a Cold War space & ICBM race, and spurring the creation of NASA.
A color photograph of a contemporary duplicate of Sputnik 1 on display in a museum. It is basically a metal sphere with four long metal antennas protruding from it (all pointing in one direction), like feelers on an ant or whiskers on a cat.The front page of the October 5, 1957, edition of the New York Times, with the triple-deck banner headline, "SOVIET FIRES EARTH SATELLITE INTO SPACE; IT IS CIRCLING THE GLOBE AT 18,000 M.P.H; SPHERE TRACKED IN 4 CROSSINGS OVER U.S." There is also a small illustration showing the satellite's orbital path.

There was a time, 50 or 60 years ago, when you could save state-college tuition with a summer job. In-state tuition was 200 or 250 times the minimum hourly wage. Six weeks’ labor. Now it’s 12,000 to 15,000 times the hourly minimum wage. 7 or 8 months’ fulltime pay, before taxes, rent, or food.

A small, curvy, white lady stands on a stream of purple magic coming from a fairy wand in her hand. She's wearing a purple -blue dress and has red hair swept up into a messy bun.
The expression on her face (eyes closed) is somewhat self-satisfied, and in her other hand, upraised, a cloud of magic in yellow and red tones spells out "CHAOS!".

Bottom half of a manuscript page where we can see a drum player and an odd-looking stag.A close-up on the stag reveals that it's a man-made costume: the two hind legs are human feet, the fore legs are a cane or crutch, and a human face can be seen peering out through the fur of the chest

This morning in 1945—at 5:29 AM (Mountain War Time)—about 35 miles southeast of Socorro, New Mexico, the nuclear age began with a big bang. Contrary to later widespread assumptions, the area surrounding the remote TRINITY test site was not uninhabited, and the fallout did not drift away harmlessly.
A black and white, high-speed photograph of the Trinity explosion at 0.025 seconds, showing what looks like a very large, slightly irregular bubble with a curtain of dust all around its bottom edge against a pitch dark sky. A scale indicating “100 meters” shows that the fireball was already approximately three times that size.Another black and white photograph of the Trinity explosion a few milliseconds later, showing an almost ghostly mushroom cloud with glowing tendrils rising from the ground above the very bright fireball.A black and white photograph of the Trinity mushroom cloud with the same 100-meter scale, this time at 60 seconds post-detonation, showing a very large and billowy mushroom cloud rising high into the sky. The sky is less black and more gray, illuminated by the light from the cloud.Another black and white photograph of the Trinity mushroom cloud taken some minutes after the previous photograph and showing the ominous looking mushroom cloud at a distance, its top spreading out and merging with regular clouds. With the sun rising, the sky is beginning to illuminate.

A bit of wisdom I’ve learned as an archivist: Everything is always falling apart. You can’t ever stop it because that’s what matter does. Your job is to slow the process down as much as you can. It’s true with documents, books, and art. And with life too- falling apart is what we do.
