I lived through DC in the '80s and '90s, towards the end it got too much. To be honest, I should have stuck it out back then, I'd have owned a house outright by now. You made the right decision staying. These things come and go.

It's a bit triggering, since I lived in DC in the '90s, and left in 1997 because of constant gunfire. Of course, it started to change a few years later, but by then I'd bought a house in the burbs. We did have an incident up the street about five years ago, but that led to massive police presence.

Not really, this is actually quite unusual for this neighborhood. And when they were caught (it didn't take long) they were all young people themselves.

The whole time the neighborhood has been gentrifying and now is all young families with kids. There were kids playing nearby who witnessed it.

We let them in out back, but then found ourselves in a crime scene and unable to get back in the house until they finished looking for shells. The National Guard were watching the perimeter we had to get behind. Crazy. We've been here 15 years and never dealt with this.

I was wrapping up my work day, had just gotten off a call with colleagues. A full clip got unloaded in the alley behind our house. Wasn't very loud, so I assumed it was down the block, but no. Three bullet holes in my wood gate. Miraculously, none of them struck the car. Minutes later, cops knocked.

After years of vigorously backing efforts to force universities to accommodate more right-wing extremists, NYT spent entire summer/fall of 2024 demanding clamp down on student protestors, then buried defunding & censoring of 2025-6 as both-sided partisan issue (when they were just ignoring it).

At the gym, others wear Vuori, Jed North, Adidas, etc. Me? T-shirts for BBQ joints and butcher shops, distilleries and spirits brands, local restaurants and food shops. Concert tees? Pfft. No. It’s food and booze (the reason I’m at the gym in the first place) all around.

White T-shirt for Hubig‘s Honey Fruit Pies, a handpie bakery in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Yellow T-shirt for Hot Dog Johnny’s, just off Route 46 in Buttzville, New Jersey. I wrote about HDJ’s for an Imbibe magazine story on drinking buttermilk. A detail it didn’t get to include in the story that the cashier told me: a woman stopped by on her way to a funeral for a gallon of buttermilk. It was to be interred with the deceased who was a lifelong customer and a fan of their buttermilk.

Local Pig, a shop in Kansas City, Missouri that used to be more of a butcher shop. They still sell cuts of raw meat, but have expanded to include prepared meals and shelf goods. Oh, hey, shirts, too.

Standing outside McLean Farms market in Palisade, Colorado, peach soft serve in hand. The shirt, though, is 100% Hoosier: Cardinal Spirits in Bloomington, Indiana.
