One of my favourites of recent years is ‘BZSt IBAN+‘. That are 2 acronyms in a row in an app’s name. The literal translation would be: ‘Federal Tax Office International Bank Account Number plus’. 😞 A plain-language name following the guidance would be ‘Share bank details with the tax office’.

Government folks, join service assessments and peer reviews! 🤩 There is so much for you to learn from your colleagues in other departments and other parts of government. Today, I was in a #ServiceStandard peer review with @simonecarrier.bsky.social from @digital-agentur.de and @nfelger.bsky.social.

Bluesky friends, very sadly (for me) I need to sell my beloved Wilma. She’s a 1988 T25 VW Campervan, complete with checkerboard floor and fold out bed, recently serviced and MOT’d. If you or anyone you know is interested please let me know - would love her to go to someone nice 🧡

Bad services are expensive. Good services are effective. An eternal task: Explaining to people how to develop services well. Evidence-based work is more expensive than assumption-based work at first. But the result is a service that meets its goals. And that doesn’t result in failure demand later

Really hoping this will reach #knitting Bluesky (if such a thing exists). I’m okay but fairly inexperienced at knitting and am currently making a striped blanket in garter stitch. The only issue is the edges looks ropey - the stitches are loose and uneven. How do I fix this?

Instead of sending an AI expert to add even more technology, why not send a forms expert to #FixTheForms and find out how much of that paperwork burden is in fact useful and necessary? No doubt you’ll soon be telling us about adding (unnecessary) AI to help whoever reads the 30-plus pages later.

Refreshing my Dunning-Kruger research and considering where the paradigm of the confident fool sits in organisational maturity models… It’s SO tiring to STILL be arguing for an iterative user-centred approach, despite the repeated failure of defining everything upfront in a secret Teams call. 🤬

GDS weighs in on the NHS's decision to retreat from Open Source
Within the UK's Civil Service you occasionally hear the expression "being invited to a meeting without biscuits". It implies a rather frosty discussion without any of the polite niceties of a normal meeting. In general though, even when people have severe disagreements, it is rare for tempers to fray. It is even rarer for those internal disagreements to spill over into public. Which is what…

"Can tech save the world?" is the wrong question. The right question is "what kind of world do we want to build?", and then the tech can help us get there. It's the re-invented worldview that the tech gives you access to that matters. The tech needs to support that worldview, not dictate it.

And you can't 'just leave this to the private sector'. As GOV.UK Verify showed, the private sector does not know much about the most marginalised in society, since they are not a source of profit. Yet people in such situations rely on public services the most.

"What is the ROI of UX?" is shaped like a question, but it is actually two hostile premises: 1) that UX is sufficiently marginal for its value to be openly questioned 2) that the asker has the authority to judge this question, and practitioners are merely consulted on it, as a matter of courtesy

Broken record mode You can’t do any service transformation work without working with operations colleagues. Issuing laws and publishing policy papers is pointless if you don’t talk about and workshop these documents with the people who are supposed to follow them. These are the best moments, too.

People are impacted everyday when accessibility isn't considered. It's not a distant, theoretical concept when you are directly impacted. When you assume that your service will have no disabled users it excludes people. Many people won't disclose until they come across something they can't do.
