This is what happens when you let your niece paint your nails "Elsa Blue" (with sparkles), then forget about it, then have to do a very serious interview giving your very serious views on the very serious economy.

We’re close to our 1000th submission for this calendar year (with 4 months to go). Two years ago we received 200 submissions in the entire year. The number of high-quality submissions remains about the same (and even that is more than we could accept, but that’s a good problem to have).

more generally: academic freedom is not some absolute license to spout beliefs regarded as crank nonsense by members of your field, backed by the legitimacy of the academy; if you persist in academia, it is because more experienced scholars have judged your work to be worthy of taken seriously

In these cases, some people always think it's a win because the government is currently going after a person or social institution they dislike. But when the government punishes people and civil institutions for their political views in violation of the First Amendment, everyone eventually loses.

📰 Today’s Sunday Times exposes just a fraction of the attacks on jobs in Universities. We know the true picture across the UK is even worse. With record student sign ups this situation is completely untenable. The government must intervene.
This table describes the level of job losses in several universities across the UK.

This is actually where I stand, I think there's darkly funny symmetry here. I actually would bet that the complaints about procedure in Cofnas' hiring are pretextual and this is retaliatory for extramural speech. But it turns out that the charges might actually have merit so are worth looking into.

University professors generally do not make very much relative to our training levels. Most of us, especially in STEM, could make a lot more in industry (and deal with a lot less bureaucracy). Grant money mostly goes to paying students, postdocs, and staff, and is heavily vetted and scrutinized.

I think the ultimate test of this is actually Boris Johnson. Boris *was fired from his first job* for making up stories, only to go on to be hired into a prestigious role at the Telegraph and spend years lying about the EU at Brussels. And I mean literally lying here; not bad punditry.

This is going straight into my syllabus for the new year:
Rule
The use of Al is prohibited for aid in conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising, translating, or editing any work submitted for credit. Al use is prohibited for any use for any purpose in any exam situation. Students may not upload course materials—including assignments, readings, slides, class recordings, or other class content— into generative Al systems. Al can be used for research on papers ONLY for the limited purpose of identifying sources, such as cases, statutes, or secondary sources. Students are responsible for the accuracy of their research and all other aspects of their submitted work. Citations to sources that do not exist will raise a presumption of prohibited Al use.
