People like GTA for all sorts of reasons. They're worlds with an unparalleled sense of place absolutely rammed with fun systems and reactivity. I imagine the 'average gamer' is as excited about taking a boat out and doing some fishing at sunset or whatever as they are going to strip clubs.

Asked the BDS movement if it'd like to provide comment on today's House House news:
"The Palestinian BDS movement wholeheartedly welcomes game developer House House’s principled decision to boycott Microsoft’s Xbox in the release of their new game “Big Walk”. By refusing to work with Microsoft as the company actively enables Israel’s ongoing genocide and apartheid against Palestinians, it is clear that the world of arts and games can be disentangled from Israel’s atrocity crimes and be used as a force for good. The BDS movement calls on all gamers, game developers, games journalists and workers to sign the No Games for Genocide pledge and boycott Microsoft’s Xbox to pressure Microsoft to end complicity."

jason schrier's gta6 piece printing among the most credulous quotes I've ever seen anyone put to game journalism paper
Designing a club for a typical video game might mean generating a few nonplayable characters in different-colored shirts, says top artist Aaron Garbut. In GTA VI, though, it means animating and scripting each individual patron, creating drinks, adding music, crafting lighting, matching the music to that lighting and composing all the other “layers and layers and layers of detail” that make a virtual club feel as authentic as possible.

This can't have been an easy decision for House House to make, well done to them. By chance, I read this news just as I was watching an interview with Humza Yousaf in which he speaks about the need for those with public profile, platform & security to use them for Palestine.

An explanation on why Big Walk isn't available on Xbox. bigwalk.game/xbox
Regarding Xbox

In June 2026 we announced that the release of Big Walk would be limited to computers, Switch 2 and PS5. Since then, we have received many messages and comments, asking about a future Xbox release. We would like to address those questions here:

We have made the decision not to release Big Walk on Xbox, in accordance with the Palestinian-led BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement’s call to boycott Microsoft, and their designation of Microsoft Games (and Xbox) as a priority boycott target. If you need help understanding our motives, we would recommend reading about why Microsoft is a BDS priority target, the successes this kind of pressure has already had on Microsoft, and especially, watching this great introductory piece by People Make Games.

It has always been our intention for Big Walk to be played by groups of friends, and we know that keeping the game off Xbox runs counter to those intentions. This decision means that some people will miss out on playing Big Walk with their friends, and we understand the disappointment we’re causing. We are disappointed too.

We would love for people to be able to play the game on Xbox, but not until Microsoft and/or Xbox have been removed as BDS boycott targets.

We’ve made this decision with the belief that meaningful change can be made in the world, that coordinated collective action can confront even the most powerful interests, and that one day, Palestine will be free.

Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,
House House

TIL that before English adopted the word "giraffe," it was called a "camelopard". I shit you not, that is literally the archaic name for a giraffe — bc Romans thought it looked like a camel covered in leopard spots... #thanksihateit Even the scientific/Latin name for giraffe is Camelopardalis. 😭

Western triple-A is dying. Now what? A free one: newsletter.hitpoints.co/400-graveyar...
A paragraph of text from the newsletter Hit Points:

"The platform holders are similarly hosed, and the more they talk about competing with TikTok or PolyMarket, the more they fiddle in the margins with new structures or fun policies, the more nakedly aware of it they appear. They cannot make a catalogue play, go looking for the next Tokyo Jungle, Parappa or Keeper, because they’ve burned all their bridges and the indie scene has that stuff on lock regardless. They have tried to diversify over the years — Sony by mixing up its cinematic sad-dad line-up with a dozen live-service hamster wheels; Microsoft by buying everything in sight in the hope of locking us all into an industry-devouring subscription service — but players in both instances voted with their wallets and thumbs. Now we see the flogged corpse of Halo thrown desperately over the wall at Activision while Satya Nadella calls ten thousand layoffs “great to see”. We have whispers of a new Uncharted game from Naughty Dog that I will be lucky to play before I retire. We have, above all, two companies gearing up for a new generation of consoles that no one wants, or needs, or can even afford. If the rumour mill is right, and next-gen kicks off in 2028, I am increasingly convinced that the next PlayStation and Xbox will be the last of their line. Their spec sheets will read like suicide notes."

Galactic Racer really is better than you'd assume at face value. The structure (roguelite, branching race paths) does a lot, but somehow it's *impossibly* cinematic, it looks better than Phantom Menace and manages a much better race drama *every time* than Phantom Menace too. Magical stuff.

if you use AI to generate code that you don't read or review and don't understand and give it a massive scope and let it loose on your codebase, you will build mountains of tech debt and you'll eventually not understand your own codebase anymore
