My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

#BeachSpectres day 1 went really well. I heard that we might have completed 100 level-metatiles, which would be around 800-900 tiles stamped in the sand. The unusually gloomy weather didn't get us down. Same again tomorrow!
A couple of dozen people stood around a large area of sand stamped with Spectre tiles. Selfie with me and Max Hughes looking at the camera, and the Spectre tiling in the middle of shot with people spots around it.

From EARTHSEED: THE BOOKS OF THE LIVING
Choose your Leaders with wisdom and forethought.
To be led by a coward is to be controlled
by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool is to be led
by the opportunists who control the fool.
To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen.
To be led by a liar
is to ask to be told lies.
To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery.

Feels apposite right now
And then he realized why he was thinking like this.
It was because he wanted there to be conspirators. It was much better to imagine men in some smoky room somewhere, made mad and cynical by privilege and power, plotting over the brandy. You had to cling to this sort of image, because if you didn't then you might have to face the fact that bad things happened because ordinary people, the kind who brushed the dog and told their children bedtime stories, were capable of then going out and doing horrible things to other ordinary people. It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was Us, what did that make Me?
After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No-one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us.
It's Them that do the bad things.

Hey. Hey guess what. Guess what day it is? It's our birthday, and the Vagina Museum is nine years old today. The world has changed massively in those nine years. We started out with a tweet... and now we're a vibrant community space, dedicated to education and celebration!
A tweet from Florence Schechter saying "PEOPLE there is a penis museum in iceland but no vagina museum ANYWHERE. Who wants to make one with me?" Around the screenshot is a montage of people enjoying the Vagina Museum. Mia, a young musician, plays the guitar on a stage in our industrial-vibe event space. Our gift shop looks warm, welcoming and cosy with shelves of books and vag swag. Dr Alex and Katja stand, smiling, outside our blue double doors. Lily and a group of volunteers pose wearing F Uterus t-shirts, a black shirt with a white graphic of a uterus where the tips of the uterine tubes are replaced with hands, middle finger up. They echo the pose, sticking their tongues out. A huge party rages in the event space.

Screen shot from Paul Embery’s X account:

Respect to this police officer. Confronted by radicals demanding the arrest of a Christian preacher on the grounds that Whitechapel "is a Muslim area" she was calm and professional and
gave them short shrift. Let's see more of this from the police.

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.
