Article 25 (3)(e) of the statute establishing the International Criminal Court criminalizes incitement to genocide. If someone can walk into the United Nations and say this, they’re daring the court to act.

Here’s a funny new version of th crowding-out argument. In the old days, we were told fiscal tightening was needed to solve the problem of weak private investment. Now, we are told tightening is needed because private investment is so strong. Austerity: always the answer! www.ft.com/content/d96c...

This is absolutely true. Centrist politicians have essentially fetishised "tough choices" into being an end in itself. If you don't have to throw someone under the bus to achieve some broader strategic goal (even if you're not certain what that goal is), it's not grown-up politics.

This is depressing, they are just going to keep going with the earned settlement reforms, including some frankly insulting and weaselly reasons why their retroactive application of the changes to people already here isn't really retroactive because those people haven't applied for ILR yet.
LinkedIn poat by
Jonathan Thomas.

The screenshot shows the first part of the long post, which reads:

Shabana Mahmood just finished two and a half hours of
talking quite fast in front of the Home Affairs Committee - my top 10 takeaways on what she said on the immigration/asylum policy front - her views, not nec mine:
1. no Burnham inspired change to immigration and asylum policy - gonna keep on keepin' on - doesn't mean there won't be any changes to details of earned settlement inc potential transitional provisions, but the principle behind earned settlement holds
2. can absolutely apply earned settlement retroactively for those yet to make their settlement application; that isn't retroactive because the rules that apply to your settlement application are the rules that are in place at the time of your settlement application

My uni. So far, two of my three days of classes for my postgrad degree this semester will be instructor-less for as long as management refuses to take compulsory redundancies off the table. I stand with the unions, even as I'm terrified for what it'll mean for my degree and student visa.

Staff at my university (Glasgow Caledonian) are going on strike. I support them and all unions. At the same time, as an international student on a postgrad program, I'm scared. Student visas are neither cheap nor forgiving. If this delays my degree, what happens to me?

Just a reminder as the new academic year kicks off - the UK government has deliberately, ruthlessly, throttled the recruitment of international students, solely to pander to racists, and the resultant 25%+ fall in numbers can and will only accelerate some universities into bankruptcy.

this exact problem came up in a discussion group on the idea of district heating. "some people I've anecdotally created use more then their fair share of the free communally beneficial heat systems: my LLM idea would automate the temperature based on use, to keep it fair and viable"

Watching people miss the point. The second clause is key. This is dogwhistling that cutting affirmative action was not just necessary, but good for everyone. This is AfD's position that many of Germany's problems stem from feeling guilty about the Holocaust. He's justifying erasing history.

I started, stopped, read a summary for "Alchemised" by SenLinYu. It's a Harry Potter Draco/Hermione fanfic ripped straight from the acrimonious HP "shipping wars" era. Not just the plot, but the writing level itself is of the era; this is not a good thing. It has a "kid goes to Hogwarts" ending.

Workshopping a thought. All of politics, biz, life, etc is a negotiation. Seeking progress, our ideal perfect achievable desire to see done is a "10." At the negotiating table, our opp wants "0," none of it to happen. 0 has weight due to inertia besides; what hasn't happened, may never. 1/7

900+ academics and others have so far defended this man on grounds of academic freedom. That’s how easy it was for them to support a openly racist man. They didn’t even bother to double check whether the racist happens to also be against academic freedom. Total surprise, he is.
