For my first migration class of the semester I often ask students "If you time travel 10 years forward and discover you live in a different country, where would you be? And why would you have moved?" Today, for the first time ever, a few students answered "maybe I moved because the US invaded us" 😭

TIL that in Toronto's municipal election, children get their own election for Tree of the Year 🌳! Kids get a ballot, drop it off at the official voting places, and the ballots get counted to decide which tree gets planted next year. Also love that election info comes in 26 languages!

I was fortunate to be able to share work at many different places this summer! In Spain, I visited CED and attended RC28 (which came with a flamenco show 🔥); in Japan, I visited Hokkaido University and ate icecream every day; back in Canada, I went to the most amazing conference on fertility/policy!

My student Aadi Mishra and I have a new paper out looking at the mental health effects of mass shootings in the United States. Using the Household Pulse Survey and a database of public mass shootings from Northwestern University, we show widespread increases in anxiety & depression.

Undergrads often find Sociology classes depressing b/c there's so much emphasis on inequality & how people's lives are influenced by factors outside of their control. But I think Sociology is the ultimate discipline of hope and optimism - we believe no group is inherently "less-than." 1/5

This is hardly a new policy; Canada's had an "active" parent sponsorship program but it's been closed to new applications for the last six years. This just makes it even more official. Yes, that's right: 🇨🇦's had 2,300,000 new immigrants since Nov 2020, and accepted *zero* parent sponsorship apps.

The 250th 'birthday' of the US has folks wondering what the future may look like. For demographers, it's helpful to look at the accuracy of past population projections. In 1970, the Census projected the US pop in 2020 would be between 299 and 440 million. The actual pop in 2020 was 331 million. 1/

There's a common notion that acculturation harms immigrant health, but acculturation is multidimensional (e.g., linguistic, residential, social). My new work shows it's the *mismatch* between dimensions - not acculturation itself - that explains immigrants' health decline: doi.org/10.1177/0022...

Week 11: From Education to the Labor Market
24 hours before you write, spend one day noticing how people on campus talk about internships, jobs, or recruiting, or reflect on the information you receive from the university or firms about career options.

Write down one specific interaction you observed (who said what, where, what happened – i.e. provide concrete detail). Now, apply Rivera – use at least one concept (options include, but aren’t limited to, “fit,” cultural matching, polish). What is being rewarded, and how, if at all, does this relate to Khan’s concept of ease?

Found it interesting that as we scroll down in poll, the sample size gets smaller (people stop voting because they lose patience; makes sense) but the % Nays also increases by a lot (starting with #18 it's all dominated by Nays)? So patience w/ survey is correlated with more negative opinions?
