Sociology sometimes. Fan and producer of small-batch, artisanal handcrafted research. Goal is to be the most boring poster on the internet. I can't believe I have to say this, but these views are mine alone.

I disagree with this post almost completely. Done right, a reasonable paper limit is not "asking scientists to slow down" because progress isn't measured in the number of "papers." It's the old salami. Write a good, thorough paper, instead of 10 padded slopbombs or inconsequential mini-pies

Turns out the problem with two-way fixed effects is that it performs badly when there is effect heterogeneity, rather than...whatever it was we were arguing about? That's why the new models perform better.
The results show that much of the bias in TWFE reflects functional-form misspecification: when treatment effects are modeled in event time, TWFE performs well under time heterogeneity, with only modest bias in later posttreatment periods when strong group-specific heterogeneity is present. None of the new estimators is universally superior, and all involve trade-offs, with some being more robust to anticipation effects and others less sensitive to deviations from parallel trends.

I was also pretty stunned by the wording of this NBER abstract 🫠. As @rcobooth.bsky.social lays out very nicely, there are many important questions to be explored here, but language, especially around reproductive choices, matters. substack.com/home/post/p-... #econsky #demography

Yet one more piece of evidence that academic researchers and institutions should be banding together to develop locally run open-source models, along with custom packages for academic practice. I think a lot of people have experimented with stuff like this but it is not widespread.

I once asked a guy from China why all the Chinese menus in the NC Research Triangle were Sichuan. Were there a lot of Sichuan migrants to the Triangle? No, he said, it's just that the Chinese immigrants know that Sichuan cuisine is the undisputed heavyweight champion.

Economics papers fall under four categories: Amazing, Super Narrow, Alien Colonial Anthropology, and TL;DR. Guess which one this is, and then read the abstract and you will get your answer. I will never understand how anyone would want their names and reputations to be associated with this.

A few months ago I learned that part of the reason for Canadian Confederation was that a militia made up of former Union soldiers from the US invaded Canada after the US Civil War. For the record, "British North America" wasn't totally blameless in this one.

It's so bad. Complete amateurs. A political party changing its name so voters don't know who they are, two different paranoid party leaders leading to defections, party purges, and leader removals. Some lawmakers who quit joined a new party. Now they are unjoining. Including the leader of the party.

Americans simply have zero understanding of what Canada is like, who Canadians are, or even how policy works here. I learned ignorant I was immediately, and even within months looking at American newspapers *reporting on Canada* was farcical. Like, "wow, do you really not know?"

"If God isn't a Tar Heel, then why is the sky Carolina Blue" might be my favorite semi-blasphemous example of spuriousness. At the minimum there is a serious issue with time ordering, but in general it seems like divine providence is not a good explanation for university colors.

OLS is unreasonably effective; there is no reason why it should work this well, but it does. Some propensity-style methods beat it (with additional computational power), but others don't and probably should be skipped. Flexible ML estimators are typically needed to make it worthwhile over OLS.

My working hypothesis is (1) that the causal relationship is *not* that social media poisons people's brains and makes them depressed. It's that (2) it helped to poison society and that our brains are correctly interpreting that as bad.

There's an interesting tension here. If humans have name for it, then it's a social construct. But some social constructs are us trying to make sense of the world around us (e.g., ADHD, carnivores, sleep), and others are wholly constructed by us (e.g., the law, the market, the nation-state).

I should note that I don't really see an oil pipeline as making sense even with this. There is definitely a big market for oil in Asia *today*, but in 10 years I don't see it. There's huge demand destruction in oil happening there right now.
