I will be eternally grateful to have been born in a literate culture where literacy was valued and expected and I still had the time, attention, and freedom to develop a literacy practice. Understanding context, inference, vocabulary, perspective, affect — all powerful, useful skills and values.

nobody but you has ever said “it went through the ringer” with that intended meaning. people do say “he’s a ringer,” describing a seasoned pro who is *deceptively* skilled. in no universe did the NYT mean to say the tested product “went through a skilled opponent.” signed, a ringer

A film adaptation of Moby Dick (pretty sure the 1998 one) features a congregation singing “Eternal Father Strong to Save,” rather than the hymn printed in the novel. It’s a problem because “Eternal Father” wasn‘t published until nine years after the novel.

True story. I walked into a local music festival this weekend. As we hit the top of the event stairs a low toned but brightly shaped voice shouted from stair shadows, “NAME BRAND COLLARDS!” I pointed in the voice’s direction. We never saw each other and yet we definitely met. 🤣

So, the reason we mock horrible fascists is not to make fascists change their minds. It is to show they are mockable. It breaks the veneer of respectability and power. It gives others social permission to mock them. Satire is poisonous to power because it makes opposition both fun and collaborative.

Mr. B is teaching a class this semester focused on engineering solutions for extending / enhancing “healthy lifespan.” He asked his students what age they considered to mark the demographic threshold of “the elderly” and one group said, “People in their 40s and 50s.”

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

Accept ‘bad things’ in return for benefits of AI, says Sam Altman
Boss of OpenAI calls for a regulatory light touch because of the ‘good stuff’ the technology can deliver Sam Altman says he believes the world should accept “bad things” happening with AI in exchange for the benefits of the technology. The chief executive of OpenAI cited hacks, scams and “other bad things that will happen” in an interview that sparked an instant backlash from critics of the major AI companies. His comments came after one of his company’s safety experts resigned, saying at the weekend that its “culture is broken”. Continue reading...

Its not quite time to really tell people what’s happening, plainly, because they’re still caught in the midterms fever but someone credible has to emerge soon to do it or it’s a wrap.
