"If you’re looking for inspiration in the fight against authoritarianism in the US, you might want to talk to parents of school-age children — because a bunch of them are taking on the tech oligarchs and notching wins." 💪💪💪

At a moment when major public school districts like LA and NYC are leading by example to protect students from predatory tech companies, "AI-based" Alpha School is requiring students to chase clout on a dying social media platform. These kids deserve so much better.

Yes, this:
A screenshot of Audrey Watters’ weekly post that reads, “This growing rejection and refusal of technology – inside and outside of schools – is about much much more than the technology itself. It is, in part, about the loss of control; the loss of agency, autonomy, and privacy. It is a response to the oligarchs’ efforts to undermine democracy. It is about these billionaires’ dismal, dystopian vision for the future – a wanton destruction of the planet writ large and local communities writ small; their apparent hatred for home and humanity alike.”

A statement from the Canadian Teacher's Federation calls AI in schools and the cognitive offloading it causes "threat to democracy". Vancouver should be banning AI from schools like NYC and LA. www.ctf-fce.ca/public-educa...

For the night crowd: the wins you’re seeing in NYC and LA this week did not fall from the sky. They are the result of literally thousands of hours of organizing by parents, teachers, advocates in both communities. These wins belong to them - and the millions of kids in both cities who will benefit.

Today, America’s two largest school districts sent a message to the rest of the country that AI in schools is far from inevitable. When we organize and fight back, we win.

This comes on the same day that @mayor.nyc.gov announced a 1-yr moratorium on AI use in NYC elementary & middle schools, following a tireless campaign by the heroes in @aimoratoriumnyc.bsky.social. It’s not perfect, but it’s a good start.

Today, members of @schoolsbeyond.bsky.social showed up at the first meeting of the LAUSD AI Ad Hoc Committee to reiterate our demands for an immediate moratorium on student AI use. But District staff stunned us by announcing that all standalone AI products are now blocked on student devices TK-12!

Until the LAUSD school board's Ad Hoc Committee on AI has had time to assess the existing research and weigh the risks against the potential benefits, there can be no justification for continuing to allow the district's students to be used as guinea pigs for untested AI technology. #lausd
