🆕 Information access rewires social networks Today on VoxDev, Laura Derksen (Frisch Centre for Economic Research) & Pedro Souza (Queen Mary University of London) discuss how access to online information reshapes social networks in Malawi: ow.ly/aM0s50ZAl9E

Information access rewires social networks
Access to sought-after knowledge can make a person more central in their networks. In Malawian schools, students with exclusive access to online information became social hubs, as others connected to them for indirect access. Policies that target initially well-connected people may underperform, as networks change endogenously.

The largest cause of deforestation is, and has been, the expansion of farmland. But the production of which products, in particular, has been driving this in recent decades? A recent study, published in Nature Food by Chandrakant Singh and Martin Persson, answered this question.

What
Survey participants were given a random subset of countries and country attributes to consider. The combinations were presented in a grid form where participants were prompted to associate countries with various characteristics. If a participant indicated they had not heard of a country, it was removed from their survey.
Each participant considered about half of the country attributes for roughly a third of the countries. The more times an attribute-
country pair was checked off, the higher the attribute score was for that country.
In addition to considering countries in terms of attributes, each survey participant was asked to respond to a set of questions
gauging perceptions of the state of the world today on a variety of topics, including world events, the economy, the environment, technology, leadership and social issues.

Dean Karlan's job at USAID was LITERALLY to improve the efficiency of its programs. DOGE is clearly not actually after cutting fraud and waste. And its actions will clearly make the US weaker while also making the world a worse place. www.npr.org/sections/goa...

Why Dean Karlan, chief economist of USAID, resigned on Tuesday
He was hired in 2022 so the aid agency could get 'more bang for our buck' with its projects. He tried to reach out to help in the rebuilding of the agency. On Tuesday he tendered his resignation.
