#OTD in 2020, Emmanuelle Charpentier & Jennifer Doudna won the #Nobel Prize in #Chemistry "for the development of a method for genome editing" (referring to their groundbreaking work on the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors). They were the first all-female team to win a Nobel in science. #WomenInSTEM
A side-by-side composite photo of French microbiologist Emmanuelle Charpentier (born December 11, 1968) on the left and American biochemist Jennifer Doudna (born February 19, 1964) on the right. The pair made history by developing the CRISPR-Cas9 "genetic scissors" technology in 2012, which earned them the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. On the left, Dr. Charpentier stands indoors with her hands casually resting in her jeans pockets, looking directly at the camera with a calm, subtle smile. She wears a dark blue tailored blazer over a dark buttoned shirt. Behind her is a large chalkboard filled with scientific diagrams and hand-written biological terms like "ADN Virus," "RNA," "Cas9," and "Bact." On the right, Dr. Doudna stands outdoors with her arms crossed, smiling warmly. She is wearing a brown structured blazer over a dark V-neck top, paired with dark jeans and a black belt. She is positioned before a large, minimalist silver metal sculpture made of intersecting arches, with a soft-focus background of green trees. The composition blends the rigorous, analytical workspace of the laboratory with an open, organic outdoor environment, evoking a professional, accomplished, and confident mood that emphasizes their revolutionary impact on biotechnology.

Space engineer Katherine Bennell-Pegg was the first astronaut to train under the Australian flag, 2024. #WorldSpaceWeek🚀 She serves as Director of Space Technology at the Australian Space Agency, leading projects including their upcoming lunar rover. #WomenInSTEM #Australia
A color portrait of Katherine Bennell-Pegg (born 1984), the historic space systems engineer who became the first qualified astronaut to train under the Australian flag. Positioned centrally against a dramatic backdrop, she smiles warmly and confidently at the camera. Her straight, shoulder-length brown hair is parted down the middle and tucked neatly behind her ears. She stands with her arms crossed, wearing a professional, deep blue flight jumpsuit adorned with multiple official insignia. Her left shoulder displays the Australian national flag, positioned directly above a rectangular name tag that reads "K. BENNELL-PEGG" under pilot wings, with a secondary tag below reading "European Astronaut." Her right arm features the official round patch of the Australian Space Agency alongside a circular "Hoppers" patch. The composition places her before a striking contrast: a stark, shadowy dark wall on the left lit by a crisp white spotlight, and a vivid, diagonal blue and white image of the Earth from orbit on the right. The lighting casts soft shadows across her face, creating a professional, inspiring, and historic mood that reflects her trailblazing status.

If you live on portions of the northern Gulf coast highlighted here, winds are forecast to be high enough to make further preparations for Isaias impossible by Friday. Do you have an evacuation plan? Is your home ready? Prepare now. www.weather.gov/safety/hurri...
National Hurricane Center map showing the earliest reasonable arrival times of tropical-storm-force winds from Tropical Storm Isaias, as of October 7, 2026. Tropical-storm-force winds could reach the southern Gulf of Mexico Wednesday evening, spread northeast across the central Gulf Thursday, and reach portions of the northern Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle as early as Friday morning. Areas farther inland across Mississippi and Alabama could experience these winds by Friday evening. Colors indicate the probability of sustained winds of at least 39 mph, with the highest probabilities concentrated along the storm's projected path.

8th of Owltober! Found on a busy road, this tiny Saw-whet Owl was scooped up for treatment at JLS Wildlife Hospital in Ithica, NY. After testing and rehab he was determined OK for release. Want to donate to JLS? www.vet.cornell.edu/giving/ways-... Source: fb.com/279924138530... #owlsintowels 💛🦉
A Saw-Whet Owl is wrapped in a cosy seafoam coloured garment, looking towards camera with rich sunflower yellow eyes twinkling from a trio of reflected ceiling lights. A syringe of fluid is administered to his open beak by a human wearing lavender nitrile gloves. It's possible he has the barest hint of a scowl in response to the fluids, but it might just be a stray black feather or two, making it look like a raised bottom eyelid. He's a little pink around the maw, probably from his latest meal of diced + defrosted animal treats, being the little carnivore that he is.

Remembering Dr. Janice Voss during #WorldSpaceWeek 🚀 & #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth. An engineer & astronaut, she served as a mission specialist on 5 Shuttle missions & was Science Director for NASA's Kepler Space Observatory. #WomenInSTEM She was born #OTD in 1956 & died of #breastcancer in 2012.
A candid, documentary-style photograph of American engineer and NASA astronaut Dr. Janice Voss (1956–2012) operating the controls inside a Space Shuttle flight deck in microgravity. Seated at a slight angle and framed from the torso up, she turns back over her right shoulder to look directly at the camera with a bright, joyful, and radiant smile. Her thick brown hair is floating buoyantly upward and backward away from her face, a clear visual indicator of the zero-gravity environment. She is dressed in a dark navy blue crew flight jacket over a red collared shirt. Her left hand rests lightly on a control console above her, while her right hand works near a grid of gray instrument buttons. She is surrounded by the complex, industrial interior of the shuttle cabin, which is packed with densely arranged instrumentation panels, monitors displaying digital data, toggles, wiring bundles, a mounted camera assembly, and an orange flight suit securely strapped to the bulkhead beside her. The natural, unfiltered cabin lighting casts soft shadows across the scene, evoking a professional, inspiring, and triumphant mood. The composition emphasizes her historic significance as a veteran of five spaceflights and a champion for women in STEM fields.

For people from the East Coast,Ohio and any states further west are the Wild Wild West. When I was in high school in Maryland, we learned a "historical story" about how Daniel Boone had crossed the Cumberland Gap into the wilds west of Maryland. That was enough for me. This fatigue card shows a stickman chained to the sofa. It says "I have a condition which causes fatigue - debilitating exhaustion that can affect mobility, strength, memory, concentration, speech, digestion and more. Symptom levels vary a lot. Recovering from doing too much can take days or weeks. I may look fine even when I'm not. I may need to do things differently. Living with this is my normal."

Being out and about using a wheelchair or walker is a very different experience to an able-bodied stroll. Cars parked on the pavement (genuinely trying to be considerate and park out of the way!) often mean we can't get past and have to find an alternative route or head into the road. Please -
Leaflet that says "Please leave a gap so wheelchair users and pushchairs can get past. Thank you." With an illustration of a stickman in a manual wheelchair looking rather distressed/trying to work out a solution - as they face a car parked snuggly up against a wall, blocking a pavement.
