From the outside people with brain fog often look fine - so it is easily misunderstood as: lack of care, laziness, disinterested-ness, not trying etc. But in reality, brain fog can make life really tough - it can affect remembering things, making decisions, thinking things through,
Card that says card, with a plain border and a zombie stickman with cotton wool thought bubble. "Warning: Severe brain fog. currently in 'Zombie-with-head-full-of-cotton-wool' mode. I may struggle to remember or understand what I'm told, or to make myself understood. If it isn't an emergency please try later."

With hidden disabilities, people can often try to ‘encourage’ us by refusing to take no for an answer. Without realising it they can undermine important self management decisions. This card provides a way to help other people to understand that we we say no for a reason – it’s not a random -
This ‘No for a reason’ card says:

"When I say no, it’s because I’ve considered the options and consequences.
Please respect my decision. If you don’t understand it, there may be factors you aren’t fully aware of." It has a stickman holding old fashioned hanging scales. One side labeled 'benefit' with a small green sack in. The other side labeled 'cost' - with a much larger purple sack, and words: increased symptoms, worsened health, inability to do other tasks.

Finished the cross stitch - now doing the backstitch (that's the lines added over the top of the cross stitches). So far I've only done the butterfly backstitch and a bit on the white flowers, got a few sprigs, the birds and the bees still to do.
A completed cross stitich of flowers (mostly dahlias, dog roses, and foxgloves) in pinks, res, and whites, wtih foilage, plus 2 robis, 3 bumble bees, and an orange and black butterfly.

Here's today's column on the astonishing, ongoing mistreatment of people with #ME/CFS. Please spread it far and wide: the only thing which can break the media's wall of indifference is seeing an article about the issue go viral. Thank you. 1/2 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Did you know that we have many cards for people with anxiety? You can find them all here: www.stickmancommunications.co.uk/category/anx... - and from there you can filter them down by type and topic too, so you can find the relevant ones more easily. This page is new. Let me know if you find bugs!

Work on the new shop page with improved filters is going well - I think the basic structure is there, so I've made it live on my website. Still got lots to do with putting the right products in each category, but I think it's nicely usable -

This autonomic dysfunction card says

"I have autonomic dysfunction. My autonomic system is faulty, affecting: breathing, heart rate (HR) blood pressure (BP), digestion, temperature control, sweating, “fight or flight”, bladder, bowel, and more.

This can cause many symptoms including abnormal BP/HR, dizziness, fainting, tremors, fatigue, pain, brain fog, and breathing and digestive problems.

Symptoms are variable and may be made worse by anything affecting this system, including: eating, standing, sitting up, reaching up or bending, temperature changes, bright lights, loud noises, and stress.

There is no known cure for my type of autonomic dysfunction, it is my normal."

One thing about chronic illness is how on any day, one symptom set might be vastly improved - but another a lot worse! So days can be simultaneously a good day and a bad day! Today my fatigue and brain fog has improved - 2 days of pretty strict rest after a busy weekend has paid off. However,

I'm headed out today, and this card will be with me. Usually I'm very chatty, but when fatigued or overwhelmed I can struggle with my words, and need to be slow. But when my words are slow people can stress - jumping in with their own words, worrying I'm not ok, or am offended or upset, or am -

Some people with #Tourette's have socially inappropriate tics. This card can help let people know without having to constantly talk about/explain it. (We have a different version for ppl without socially inappropriate tics - both are available from www.stickmancommunications.co.uk/tourettes-tics )
laminated card with 2 ticking stickmen, one in a wheelchair. Text: I have Tourette's. I frequently make involuntary noises and movements called tics. These may include obscene and socially inappropriate words and gestures. I can't control them. It is exhausting. Talking about them can make them more intense. Please don't stare or take offence. Please check it's okay with me before talking about my tics.

Of course I'm biased because I created it, but I honestly find this poster so useful - it helps me slow down and make conscious decisions about what I do, what strategies or aids to use, and what I need to do to recover. It's also a great way to help other people understand my decisions.
Title:

“To do or not to do?” pacing and activity decision chart [blue header and footer.] (Note: This is a simplified version. This process varies between individuals.)

This chart has boxes with questions in – each box having a yes or no answer – which sends you down different paths to help you reach a conclusion about whether to do an activity or not (or to help explain your decision to someone else).

Box 1: Given current symptoms, will I be able to complete the task?
Yes
Box 2: Will it cause a significant increase in pain/fatigue/other symptoms?
Yes/Unsure
Box 3: Can I make it more manageable by: splitting the task into smaller sections? using an adaptation or aid to make it easier? asking for help with challenging parts of the activity? having an exit strategy if it turns out to be too much?
Yes.
Box 4: do I have enough recharge time between now and when I next need to function?
No.
Outcome: Best not. It may be okay to do this in emergencies or on special occasions.

I was writing the alt text on facebook, and looked at what their automatically generated alt text thought my fatigue card said....needless to say, I am going to continue manually entering my alt text, but I have to admit, their attempt was on the amusing side of mindboggling!
Screenshot of my severe fatigue card, and FBs attempt to auto-generate what it says. My severe fatigue card says: "My fatigue is currently severe. I must rest to manage my symptoms.
Fatigue is affecting my ability to think, speak, eat, drink, and control my muscles. I can’t concentrate or move about safely.
Even sitting, noise, light or touch may worsen symptoms. I need to rest before making any decisions."

Their attempt says "May be an image of text that says CC218-N making I need worsen noise, about I can't speak, Fatigue I must My any to light or safely. eat, is rest to fatigue drink, affecting decisions. Rest restbefore before symptoms touch Even concentrate and my manage is may sitting, or move control ability my currently to my mscles, think, symptoms. severe. tickman Communications 2025.

Spoken instructions can be hard to follow for many #Neurodivergent people. It's not laziness or lack of trying - it's the brain struggling to process and retain the information. Giving time to process each step before giving the next instruction can make a big difference.

If you want to know a bit more about ADHD in reality, these cards are a good place to start. Understanding your brain means living a better life - it helps create realistic expectations and can lead to strategies that might help instead of drowning under feelings of failure.

Zoning out or daydreaming,
difficulty noticing details,
struggling to stick to tasks,
difficulty listening and following instructions,
forgetfulness,
dis-organisation,
hyperfocus,
easily distracted.

This makes life challenging. It is my normal. Please be patient. If I ask for an adaptation please take it seriously. E.g. reminders, fewer distractions, information being repeated."This card says "I have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurological condition. I may:

- Struggle with time management and information processing
- Be more impulsive when excited
- Not recognise risks
- Hyperfocus and be unaware of my surroundings
